5-LS1-1. Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly
from air and water. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the idea that plant matter
comes mostly from air and water, not from the soil.]

LS1.C: Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms

Plants acquire their material for growth chiefly from air and water. (5-LS1-1)

Logic Flow 1:
Plants grow larger with time.
The ground around plants does not absorb into the plant.
Plants will grow without soil.
Plants require oxygen and water to grow.
Therefore, plants growth comes from the air and water.

Lesson Plan 11/20

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB4ASdELBbQ (3 Minutes)

1. Students collect their bags and record changes for that day.
2. Talk about observations (results):
a. What have you noticed about how your plants grew?
b. How was the video we watched similar to what happened with your seed?
3. Teacher lets each student explain to whole group what they did
After hearing what your peers said, why did you make the decisions you made?
--Write it down
Why do you think that your plants grew without soil?
Because there was no soil in your bag, what does that tell us about where plants
get their material for growth?
Why were we recording what happened to our plants?
And how can we compare what we recorded over time? In other words, what did you do
differently from your partner and how were your results different?--Talk to your partner
about this.
Make a venn diagram that shows what I did, what my partner did, and what we
both did.
How can we find out which plants grew the most?
To what extent did keeping your bag open or closing your bag help or hurt the
plant?
Who had a closed bag that grew?
Who had an open bag that grew?
What are our conclusions based on our results? (Plants grew from air and water)
If plants grew without soil, where did the plants get their material for growth?
Provide students assessment to determine whether or not students misconceptions have
been altered.

EXT:
How can we figure out exactly how much each seed grew?
Ideally the students will suggest that we could measure how much they grew
Ideally record on the board in some way

Lesson Plan on 11/13

Teacher brings plants in. Students get one on each table.

Today we are going to be investigating how plants work. Today our question about
plants is Where do plants get most of their material for growth?

--Talk with neighbor/talk with whole group

--Refer to the assessment, split up by a,b,c and have them explain/justify as whole group

If plants have all the things they need to be healthy, what happens to the plant over
time? (they grow, get bigger)

Let students share ideas.

If plants grow over time, where does the stuff that plants are made of come from?
Where do trees get most of their mass?

So, some of you are saying that the tree comes from the carbon dioxide. Some of
you are saying that the tree comes from the soil. Some are saying it comes from
water and sunlight.

Here is a question I have for you: When you see a big tree what does the ground
look like around that?
Will plants grow without soil? This is the question that I want you to focus on today. I
want you to investigate this question to see if plants will grow without soil. I have all of
these supplies here: paper towels, water, bean seeds, plastic bags.

How can we investigate this question?

Let talk them talk to their neighbors and share their ideas.(Write in their notebooks)

We dont have a pot to grow our plant in. What can we use instead of a pot.

Start this by 10:20 AM

Come up and tell me which supplies you need for your investigation. Each one of you
can do your own investigation.

After you have your investigation set up I want you to record the decisions you made and why
you made them. Where did you place your bean seed. Make sure you know this so we can talk
about it next week.

Each day, when you have time, write or draw any changes you see in your bean.

EXT: Share where you placed your seed and why.

Formative Assessment

Imagine you have a sealed jar containing five bean seeds, air, and a moist paper towel. Nothing
can get in or out of the jar.

Imagine this same jar with its contents 12 days later. During that time the jar remained sealed.
Nothing could get in or out of the jar.

Circle the statement that best describes what the inside of the jar will look like:

A. The seeds will be rotten and begin to decay.

B. No change will happen inside the jar.
C. The seed will have sprouted and have started to produce seedlings.

Describe your thinking and provide an explanation for your answer.

How is this experiment provide evidence explaining where plants get their material for growth?

What can we do to change our experiment?

Logic Flow 2:

This closed ecological system does not make any exchange with what is outside of the system.
Because of this, in a closed system mass cant be lost or gained.
A plant will grow in a closed system.
Therefore, despite growth the growth of a plant, a closed system will not change in mass.
