According to The Language-Rich Classroom: A Research-Based Framework for Teaching

English Language Learners by Persida and William Himmele, below are some instructional
strategies for supporting EL Learners.
CHATS:
Content Reading Strategies: ELLs need support achieving success with informational
texts. The goal is to bathe students in academic language and complex linguistic features
in ways that are relevant and authentic, so that acquiring academic language and
proficiency in reading and writing becomes, for the most part, a by-product of the
activities inherent in our classrooms.

o First-language writing samples: very important for teachers to get an
understanding of students academic development in the first language, in order to
understand students needs and how to help them

advanced proficiency, academic fluency
Total Participation Techniques: high accountability placed on participation
o Pair shares
o Quick writes
o Quick draws
Scaffolding Strategies
o What do I want my students to be able to do?
o What can they currently do?
o How can I build a bridge from question 2 to question 1?
