BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING

Conversion Coating Process for Aluminum using BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGR for Replenishment

1. Introduction:

The BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING process, is used to produce a chemical conversion coating on
aluminum and its alloys. The coating ranges in color from light blue-green iridescent through a dark green. The conversion
coating has excellent paint-adhesion properties and provides underfilm corrosion protection.

The BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING bath is initially made up with BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE
COATING (Chromate-Phosphate Package)and BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGS (Fluoride Accelerator).
BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGR is a one-part liquid concentrate which is then used to maintain the
concentration of the active ingredients in the BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING chromate phosphate system.

BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING process is readily adaptable to automatic bath control using LINEGUARD
Automatic Control Equipment.

5. Equipment:

Process tanks and housings should be fabricated from 300 series alloy stainless steel, such as 304L or 316L, the 316L
being preferred for maximum tank life. In all cases approved welding techniques must be used.

Process piping and pumps should be constructed of 316 or 304 stainless steel alloys. Various formulations of plastic pipe
may be used with recommended support spacing, Schedule-80 being generally recommended. PVC Type I is limited to
maximum process temperatures of 120 Fahrenheit. CPVC and PP may be used up to a maximum process temperature of
180 Fahrenheit. PVDF may be used for all expected operating temperatures and may reduce the rate of scale buildup in
process piping. The nozzles should be fabricated from 316 stainless steel.

Heat exchanger plates should be polished 316 stainless steel. If gas fired burner tubes are used, they should be made of
Schedule-80 stainless steel pipe or equivalent. All process circulation pump seals, valve seats, door seals, etc., which
come into contact with the process solution and occasional acid equipment cleaners, should be Viton or Teflon. EPDM
may be used, but its life will be shorter.

Chemical feed pump parts and other elastomers which may come into contact with the concentrated replenishing chemical
should be Viton or Teflon. Again, EPDM may be used, but its life will be shorter.

Support equipment available from Henkel Surface Technologies for this process includes: chemical feed pumps, level
controls, transfer pumps and bulk storage tanks.

Our sales representative should be consulted for information on Henkel Surface Technologies automatic process control
equipment for this process and any additional questions. In addition, the "Henkel Surface Technologies Equipment Design
Manual" may be consulted.

6. Surface Preparation:

Cleaning:
All metal to be treated with the processing solution must be free from grease, oil and other foreign matter before the
treatment. A complete line of RIDOLINE cleaners is available under the trademark and our representative will recommend
the proper one for each installation.

Water Rinsing:
After cleaning, the metal must be thoroughly rinsed with water. The rinse should be overflowed continuously at a rate
which will keep it clean and free from scum and contamination.

Deoxidizing:
Aluminum with corrosion products or heavy oxide coated surfaces should be treated with a deoxidizer prior to the
conversion coating treatment step. The deoxidizing step should follow the water rinse and should itself be followed by a
separate water rinse. Our representative can recommend the correct deoxidizer to be used.

7. Treating with the BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING Processing Solution:

Buildup:
Fill the tank about three-fourths full with cold water. For each 100 gallons of final solution volume, add 24.5- 54 pounds
(2.0- 4.4 gallons) of BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING and circulate until thoroughly mixed. Add, with mixing,
1.7- 6.0 pounds (0.20- 0.70 gallons) BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGS. Add sufficient water to bring the
solution up to the working level and then heat to the operating temperature.

Operation:
Spray Immersion
Time: 15 to 60 seconds 30 seconds to 3 minutes
Temperature: 100 to 120 Fahrenheit 100 to 120 Fahrenheit

8. Testing and Control:

Never pipet by mouth, use a pipet filler.

Concentration:
Pipet a 5 ml sample into an iodimetric flask and dilute to approximately 100 ml with water. Add 1/2 teaspoon
(approximately 1 g) of Reagent 2 and agitate to dissolve. Add about 10 ml of Reagent Solution 49 OR Reagent Solution 44.
Replace the stopper and allow the sample to stand for approximately one minute.

After the sample has settled for approximately one minute, titrate with Titrating Solution 104 until a straw color is obtained.
Do Not rezero the burette. Add several ml of Indicator 10. The sample will turn a dark blue-black color. Continue the
titration until the blue-black color turns to a light blue-green. The ml of Titrating Solution 104 used is the bath concentration
value in points (ml). The bath concentration, expressed as the BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGR content,
can be calculated by multiplying the titration points by 0.5.

Concentration range: Within 1 point (ml) (or 0.5% of BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGR) of the value
which gives the desired results.

To increase the value 1 point (ml): 5.0 pounds (0.5 gallons) of BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGR per 100
gallons. To increase the BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGR concentration by 1%, add 1 gallon of
BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGR per 100 gallons.

NOTE: The ALODINE coating chemical bath, prepared as directed at 4.4% by volume BONDERITE M-CR 407
CHROMATE COATING, will have a titration of approximately 15 points (ml). The concentration may be adjusted to vary
the coating weight or color. Our representative will advise and assist if such changes are desired.

BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGS Control Using The LINEGUARD 101 Meter:
When BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGR is used as the replenisher, routine additions of BONDERITE M-
CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGS should not be necessary. However, periodic checks of the fluoride accelerator content
with a LINEGUARD 101 Meter are recommended. After the BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING coating
chemical bath has been made up and adjusted to any special requirements regarding coating weight or color, the initial
LINEGUARD 101 Meter reading is determined for that particular BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGS (active
fluoride components) bath content. That LINEGUARD 101 Meter reading of the initial bath is to be recorded and used in
comparison with later BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGS concentration readings to determine the amount
of BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGS coating chemical needed for replenishing, if necessary. Our
representative will assist.

After the BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING bath is in use, the LINEGUARD 101 Meter reading is taken only
after the BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING concentration has been determined and adjusted to its original
concentration. If the original BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGS content was 0.7% by volume, and the
original BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING content was 4.4% by volume, additions of BONDERITE M-CR
407 CHROMATE COATINGS can be made using the following table as a guide.

Note: if the original bath was made up with conditions other than 0.7% BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGS
and 4.4% BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATING, creation of a different table may be necessary. Our
representative should be consulted.

For maximum processing economy and coating uniformity, it is advisable to make frequent, small additions of BONDERITE
M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGS coating chemical. When BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGR is used as
the replenisher, large additions of BONDERITE M-CR 407 CHROMATE COATINGS should seldom be necessary except
for mechanical loss.

Mechanical Loss:
Whenever a portion of the bath is discarded or lost by leakage, the volume should be restored with the same proportion of
chemicals and water as used in the original bath.

9. After Treatment:

Water Rinsing:
After treating, the work is thoroughly rinsed. The rinse should be continuously overflowed and the overflow should be
regulated with the rate of production so that the main body of the rinse never becomes excessively contaminated.

Post Treatment (Optional):

The treated metal is rinsed in a dilute DEOXYLYTE solution. The rinse may be heated to facilitate drying. A number of
DEOXYLYTE post treatment chemicals are available. Our representative should be consulted.

Drying:
Parts coming from the post treatment rinse should be dried as soon as possible in an indirectly fired oven or by other
means which will not contaminate the metal with fumes, oil, or partially burnt gases. In many cases, heavy gauge metal
will retain enough heat to dry completely and rapidly without using an oven.

Products with cavities or pockets which trap moisture should be blown dry with a jet of clean, compressed air. Moisture
splatters should be dried with clean rags.
