Senior Project Proposal
A. ABSTRACT
The title of my paper is Pretty Hurts. I have chosen this title because it perfectly
correlates with the driving topic of my paper: animal testing, while also focusing on my subtopic
for my project. I have been interested in this topic for about three years. In the last year, I wrote a
research paper about the ethics of animal testing and was able to engage myself into this topic
and learn why animal testing is controversial. The following questions are my driving questions
What are the laws regarding animal testing in the United States?
Why isnt there more strongly enforced legislation regarding the experimentation
of animals?
Why are people not agreeing to end animal testing even though there are known
alternatives?
Why do people continue to use products that test on animals despite the fact that
How can I bring more awareness about this topic in an innovative fashion?
demographic to the event. The event will be called Pretty Hurts. At the event, I will have a
short presentation, with videos included, about the unnecessary means of animal testing,
informing the students about what my project is and why I chose to have the project. At this
event, I will have a guest speaker, possibly a celebrity, veterinarian, or expert on the topic,
informing all attendees about cosmetics testing on animals. It is possible to have a representative
from the body care store, LUSH, and have them talk about how their products are 100% vegan
and instead of just not using animals for their products, they actually fight against animal testing.
I will also have a display of empty soap/body care products that do test on animals, as well as
dont, in order to have an easier visual for the attendees, to see how many known products do
and do not test on animals. For the event, I hope to have several makeup artists to perform
makeover for those who wish; they will only be using makeup products that do not test on
animals. My consultant for this project is Mr. Gary Hodges, the Legal Studies Academy Honors
English 11 teacher at First Colonial High School. My project will take place at Kemps Landing
Magnet School on a weekday, where the middle school students may attend, as well as First
Colonial High School students. I will also create waivers/permission forms for the middle
schoolers as the makeovers are consisting of products that could cause irritation to the skin
should someone be allergic to certain ingredients in makeup. The permission forms are needed
just as a safety net to make sure that the middle schoolers parents approve of them attending my
project. I will have a pretest in order to evaluate how much information the attendees have
regarding my topic, go through with the event, and a pretest to see the change in results after
having learned more about my topic. The materials I will need include, but are not limited to:
Stationary materials
Pencils/Pens
Paper
Refreshments
Venue
Makeup materials:

C. MARKETING PLAN/FACILITIES/AUDIENCE
My target audience for my project will be mostly adolescents and young adults. I chose
this demographic specifically because they are at a general age to choose what products they use,
but they also dont generally take into consideration the harmful effects that some products may
have on animals. My audience will benefit from my project by being informed about what it
takes to make the products that they use on a daily basis, as well as the alternatives for such. To
ensure that I have the proper demographic, I will be hosting my event at a middle school with
adolescent students, as well as have high school student attendees. For marketing, I will have to
raise enough money in order to buy all of the makeup products, venue pricing, and donating to
an organization advocating against the vivisection of animals. I also plan to have an admission
fee of three dollars, in order to donate to the National Anti Vivisection Society, an organization
D. PROJECT STEPS
The following chart will describe each of the steps needed in order to complete my senior
project.
Midway Meet with Mr. Hodges to discuss an appropriate date and 8 hours
Steps time to hold project in order for him to attend. Confirm with
makeup artists a time and date. Also meet with possible
veterinarian/biology professor. Create rough draft of speech
given at the event. Confirm venue with principal of the
middle school. Visit school to meet students and hand out
waivers/permission forms.
E. PROJECT DOCUMENTATION
In order to document all of my progress with my project over the course of the school
year, I will do all of the following, including but not limited to:
Use a journal to write about all I did everyday that pertains to the project
F. PROJECT JUSTIFICATION
stretching myself out and getting extremely out of my comfort zone in order to educate the
young people that attend my event. Although Ive worked with this topic before, I only took it
from the ethical standpoint rather than the legal standpoint. This project will require me to dig
deeper into this topic and find more information. I know this project will be complex to pull off
and balancing all of my other classes with just the project is going to be extremely tough on my
part because the amount of prioritization that is going to be put in from me to create this project,
is going to be stressful. Aside from all of the stress and difficulty I know I will experience from
this project, it has a legal standing because it pertains to animals rights as well as the laws that
the United States has in regards to animal testing. This project means a lot to me because it is
about something that I love to talk about and am able to educate others on as well. I think it will
provide a great change for the attendees lives in the matter that they can make a small change in
G. PROJECT-PAPER CONNECTION
Within my legal research paper, I will be researching animal testing as a general topic,
but for the project I am focusing on cosmetics because it is something that everyone uses
everyday, i.e. soaps, other body care items, and makeup. The project will clearly pinpoint a
subtopic within the spectrum of animal testing. I was originally going to research cosmetic
testing on animals, however, I was unable to find sufficient laws regarding such. The United
States generally only has laws regarding the general testing of animals, and my project will
educate those who attend of alternative products, as well as ways of producing goods that are
generally tested on animals. Although it is an obscure legal issue, I have a lot to work with
H. ACADEMIC HONESTY
Having academic honesty is something that every student should uphold during the entire
educational career; students are expected to do their own work and the students should honor that
agreement. Being academically honest means to strictly avoid using others work as well as be
honorable when doing your work. Students, or anyone for that matter, should not plagiarize
anyone elses work, and always cite where they received their information from in regards to
academics. My understanding of the policies entailed in the honor code is that doing your own
work is beneficial to the student because they learn more from doing the work themselves. Of
course, this does not mean that the student is not able to ask for help, but students these days
misunderstand that asking for help on an assignment is completely different than asking someone
to give them the answers and/or do the work for them. Not following the policies means more
than a typical student may think: In-school suspension may not seem like a big deal, however, all
decisions students make now, will have an effect on their future whether it is positive or
negative; the consequences are not worth it for cheating, plagiarism, etc.
I understand that any academic dishonesty by me on any part of the project will result in failure
of the Senior Project and forfeiture of the Legal Studies Seal on my High School diploma.
