Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

People have different emotion. There are many people in the society composed of

various personality, behaviour, values and attitude. Emotional life is a part of moral

standards, ideals, goals and aspiration sometimes are emotional can feel emotion

reflexes of love, rage and fear. This aspect can trigger people to hide on their skills, be

anti-social or generally lead to anxiety or consciousness and people cannot enjoy daily

social life.

(Davidson1994 and Hofman&Kashdan 2010) studied Emotion modulates memory,

facilitates decision-making, influences learning, and provides the motivation for critical

action in the face of environmental incentives. Emotional regulation refers to how people

experience and express emotion and how they feel under the influence of that emotion.

In United Kingdom 1500 students have social anxiety disorder. The students

repeatedly avoided public situation such as lectures, group projects being absent and

non-participation (Russell 2008a; Topham, 2009).


University school of Turkey have negative relationship of emotion with the

depression 28%, anxiety 31%, and stress 36%. Being unable to enjoy life and can affect

school performances, a longstanding misery that negatively affects people lives. It is

define by feelings of worry, worthlessness, excessive guilt, loneliness, and also sadness

(Kose, 2009).

There was a gap in the literature concerning the influence of affective disorders,

such as mood and anxiety disorders and personality disorders characterized by emotion

regulation disturbances (Stefan G. Hofmann & Todd B. Kashdan, 2010). Furthermore, it

will be important to study changes in affective style during the course of treatment and

to examine whether a particular affective style predicts treatment response.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to find out the influence of affective style on social anxiety of the

elementary pupils.

Specifically this study will answer the following question:

1. What is the extent of affective style of the pupils?

2. What is the level of social anxiety of the pupils?

3. Is there a significant relationship between affective style and social anxiety in the

pupils?
4. Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between Affective Style and Social Anxiety among

Grade V pupils.

Significance of the Study

To the readers, the result of this study will give information to the people. They give

educational counselling to the pupils, so that they help for their anxiety disorder. Some

of student cant share ideas because of their fear. They encourage the student to have a

confident to participate of any activities inside and outside of the school.

This study, will serve as information of administrators to provide a comprehensive profile

regarding Affective Style and its influence on Social Anxiety in Elementary pupils.

A teacher is not only the facilitator of learning to pupils. Teacher must be giving a proper

counselling to their pupils to have a better view why the student having Anxiety disorder

problem. Some of the pupils didnt respect their teachers. Treat the student in a good

way. If the student having mistakes, the teacher giving punishment her, that reason why

some of the pupils having Anxiety disorder.

In this searcher, this study will give more information about Affective style and its

influence on Social Anxiety in Elementary pupils that will be interested to conduct study

closely.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study was delimited on the affective style and its influence on social anxiety in the

elementary pupils. This study also concentrates on the emotion of every individual.

The study use simple random sampling in choosing the respondent of fifty (50) pupils

involve four (4) sections of Grade V pupils total of 200 who officially enrolled at the

Upper Tambler Central Elemntary School 1 during the school year 2017-2018.

Definition of Terms

Affective Style- is an individual difference that refers to tendencies for regulating

emotions (Stefan G. Hofmann & Todd B. Kashdan, 2010). Emotion regulation refers to

processes by which individuals influence which emotions they have, when they have

them, and how they experience and express these emotions.

Social Anxiety- refers of fear of interacting or performing in social situations,

embarrassment, self-consciousness, feeling of being negatively judged or evaluation as

a result to avoid social interaction altogether (Luterek, 2006).
