Gender Equality

Arguing against the significance of gender equality is like arguing against the
presence of gravity. Its a rampant issue in society nowadays due to the
persistent gap in terms of access to opportunities for women and men. Since the
foundation of the United Nations in 1945, the Charter gave gender equality an
important value. Despite this value, disparity among women and men is
prevailing.

Stereotypically, women are known as the ones meant to start their lives by
fulfilling house chores and becoming housewives while men are busy setting
their goals and finding the familys budget. However, gender roles in society
are constantly changing. From an early age, we are conditioned to believe that
our sons must wear blue and our daughters must wear pink. We are
disillusioned to believe that we must fit into these socially constructed brackets
of so-called gender roles. As human beings we must reject the idea that
women are not capable of handling responsibilities as men can. Our society is
blind of the fact that we are not all limited to these gender roles.

Although much has changed since the 20th century and we are nearer than ever
to attaining gender equivalence between men and women, there are underlying
issues and common standards that prevent this from being accomplished. We
still have beliefs that differentiate between the occupations a man and a woman
can accomplish. However, gender does not define a person. We are all human
beings and women should not be inferior to their male colleagues.

The term feminism can be used to describe a political, cultural or economic

association aimed at establishing equal rights and legal security for women.
Each human being is born with a set of rights that he or she should fight for
their application where gender equality is one of the most important rights.
Gender equality is a global phenomenon that affects men and women on all
levels.

As wide as the gender gap is, most women especially in developed countries
have more prospects today than ever before. However, no country has truly
attained gender equality where both men and women have the right to achieve
their goals and reach their dreams without sexual obstacles. We need to close
the gender gap in fundamental areas where men and woman are knowledgeable
and advanced enough to contribute in such as health, education, employment
and political participation. The future of our world relies on the young women
and men of today that must work on accomplishing gender equality.
