1. General
1.1 Introduction and scope

The Lagos Osbourne Bridge crosses the Lagos Lagoon and presents a bypass for
traffic travelling between the Lekki peninsula in the east and Ikoyi island in the
west. The bridge comprises of two principle parts; a 722m long PC full-span
bridge and a 635m long balanced cantilever bridge with two central spans.
These two spans are supported by stay cables suspended from an 87m high pylon
in the middle.

The present CAD manual refers to the design of the PC full-span bridge between sys-
tem axis 0 to 380 and the balanced cantilever bridge between system axis 380 to
460. It contains requirements and specifications for all drawings, which have to be
provided to the client.

The manual describes the Structural Design team standard and is binding for all par-
ties of the design team and related designers.

4. Conventions for preparation of drawings

4.1 Drawing ID-System

The drawing name contains a ten-digit number code. For example:

00 02 1 13 001

In addition, the drawings shall be named in accordance with the settings in chapter
6.4.

During construction several drawings can be included within a DWG-File. The CAD-
Operator is responsible for an adequate file name during this period. For As-Built
drawing the CAD-file shall contain only one drawing. The file name shall be identical
to the drawing name. Spaces or special characters shall not be used within file
names.

4.2 Revisions

Before the first submission of a drawing the index Px can be used (P = preliminary, x
= running number). Alternatively the word PRELIMINARY can be used in the re-
marks area. For the first official submission of a drawing the Index - has to be used.
Every revision leads to a change of the index. The index name is a letter e.g.
changes to A, A changes to B etc. The approval of IDC changes the index of the
drawing.

All drawings sent out (each revision, even as preliminary version) have to be stored
as DWG- and PDF-files within the projects structure on the server. These files have
to be defined as read only to prevent overwriting. The contractor provides the
document management system.

Amendments, changes and corrections on the drawing have to be marked with revi-
sion clouds and characterisation. Only the latest revision must be shown on the
drawing.

This above-mentioned characterisation has to be inserted into the drawing as a block

and must not be changed.

Revision cloud and characterisation symbol have to be placed on Layout (paper

space), at the revision layer. Revision clouds arc length = 5 units = 5 mm. The char-
acterisation symbol is shown as a equilateral triangle with a length of each 10 mm (in
original DIN A0 size) and the index name inserted.

4.3 Handling

Drawings must be prepared in accordance with the instructions for CAD-planning be-
low. Before a DWG - file is provided to the client, the World Coordinate System in the
drawing has to be set as Actual Coordinate System.

Until the approval of the drawings they must be transmitted to the customer digitally in
the form of PDF-files within the document management system.

4.4 Delivery

4.4.1 General

Drawings must be sent, checked and approved in accordance with the actual time
schedule and general procedures. The client provides the general procedures. All
drawings have to be signed on a hardcopy sized DIN A3 by an authorized member of
the design team/design management.

4.4.2 Form for plot files

If requested by the client all plot files (plt-files) have to be delivered in HP/GL-2 plotter
language. Standard size for drawings: DIN A0 (1189x841mm) or DIN A1
(841x594mm).

4.4.3 Form for PDF files

The PDF files shall be erected in original size (DIN A0 / DIN A1). They can be plotted
in each size (fit to existing paper size).

4.5 Additional documents

Additional documents (e.g. Stressing protocols) have to be delivered in docx-format

(MS Word 2007), in xlsx-format (MS Excel 2007) format or PDF-format (Adobe Acro-
bat 6.0). Deviations have to be approved by the Design Manager.

5. Instructions for CAD-Planning

5.1 CAD-Tools

AutoCAD in its actual version (e.g. AutoCAD 2008) with the corresponding application
SOFiCAD (e.g. SOFiCAD 17.1) is used as a standard CAD tool. An update of CAD
tools has to be agreed by the design management/ project management and must be
installed in both design teams at the same time.

5.2 Templates

To facilitate and standardise the handling templates have been created for AutoCAD.
They contain Title block, arrow directing north, line types, text fonts, dimensioning
styles, defaults for lettering/labelling, section marking, revision block, etc.

Only the following formats are permitted:

A0 1189x841 mm filename: LOB-Standard.dwt

Format A0 may be reduced to A3 by scaling 1 : 4

5.2.1 Drawing frame and margins

Drawing frame and margins are placed within paper space. The scale is 1:1 (1 unit =
1 mm), so all drawings can be plotted in 1:1. The Insertion base point of the lower left
corner of the drawing frame shall be 0.000, 0.000, 0.000.

5.2.2 Title block and text box

The title block of the drawing and additional textboxes have to be placed on the lower
side of the drawing. Height = 62 mm max. (title block see attachment 6.3)

The name of the title block should not be changed. Its not allowed to explode this
block.

5.3 Lettering and Labelling

All lettering and labelling on the drawings have to be implemented in English lan-
guage. Section marks, titles, descriptions, legends are to be placed on paper space.

5.4 Layer Structure

The layer structure shall be used in accordance to [1]. If requested, the client will get
a copy. Layer 0 (Zero) must not contain any drawing elements. For installing new
layer names acc. to the standard layer structure the CAD Operator shall use the file
LOB.lsd with the SOFiCAD tool.

5.5 Model Space and Layout

During construction period one drawing file may contain more drawings and e.g. more
layouts (see 4.1).

CAD entities shall be drawn at full scale (1 unit : 1 meter). Final plotted scale shall be
established during composition of the drawing layout for plotting. Permitted units are
metres (m) in model space and millimetres (mm) in paper space (layout).

PAGE: 8
LAGOS OSBOURNE BRIDGE
Balanced Cantilever and Full-Span Bridge
CAD Manual Revision 1

Plan models must always be presented in their correct geographical location.

(with the exception of reinforcement drawings)

Before saving the DWG -file, the World Coordinate System in the drawing has to be
set as Actual Coordinate System. Local Coordinate System is not allowed.

Insertion base point for all construction objects must be 0.000, 0.000, 0.000.

5.6 Scales

Only the following scales will be used:

1:1000
1:500
1:250
1:200
1:150
1:100
1:75
1:50
1:25
1:20
1:10
1:5
1:2

In a longitudinal section the scale of height may be 10 times contorted.

Drawing scales shall be defined with Paper Space View ports in the drawing layout.

Details and sections shall not be scaled in model space. A drawing rule for the scale
in A0 has to be shown on each drawing if requested by the client.

5.7 Line Types

Line types shall be as follows: (example)

Description AutoCAD Standard Line Style

Continuous Continuous
Dotted Dot
Medium dashed Dashed
Long Dash DashedX2
Dash Dot Dash Dash dot
Short Dash Hidden
Dash Dot Dot Dash Divide
Long Dash Short Dash Long Dash Centre

In addition all standard line types which are implemented in AutoCAD 2008 (or ac-
tual) are usable.

Description Internally defined line types by contractor

Construction Joint Construction joint

Polylines with line widths >0 can be used.

PAGE: 9

251 dark grey Object 80%
252 grey Object 50%
253 grey Object 30%
254 grey Object 10%
255 light grey Object 100%

Plots can be prepared monochrome and coloured (use available ctb-file for plotting
LOB.ctb).

5.10 Visibility of Layers

The system variable VISRETAIN, which controls the visibility of layers in files referred
externally, (X-Refs) must be 0 (zero).

5.11 Symbol Names

Because the AutoCAD symbol table length is limited to 31 characters, the name for
layers, line types, dimension styles, blocks and text styles must be shorter or equal to
22 characters.

5.12 Dimensioning

5.12.1 General

The rules listed below shall be followed when adding dimensions to drawings to en-
sure uniformity and clarity of drawings:

o They always have to be associative (except arch dimensioning).

o Dimensioning is usually to be made in m. In case of shorter distances than one
meter the dimensioning tool will write in cm. In case of millimetres the last char-
acter of the dimension is heightened.
o Chainages have to be shown in km, e.g. km 001+384.740.
o Elevations are shown in m.
o Dimension text shall be placed above the dimension line and shall be clear of
other lines so that it is legible.
o Text shall be placed on the drawing so they can be read from the bottom or right

hand side of the drawing.

5.12.2 Styles

The following styles are to be used in SOFiCAD:

SOFI25mm (Dimensioning text height = 2.5 mm)

SOFI35mm (Dimensioning text height = 3.5 mm)
SOFI50mm (Dimensioning text height = 5.0 mm)
SOFI70mm (Dimensioning text height = 7.0 mm)

5.13 Text and Lettering

5.13.1 General

All lettering shall be highly legible so that information can be communicated with the
minimal possibility of error in reading. It shall be neat, readable and of uniform ap-
pearance. The mixing of lettering styles is permitted. Lettering shall be consistent,
both in size and placement. For clarity, lettering shall not be placed directly on top of
lines or symbols.

5.13.2 Text Fonts

The following text fonts shall be used:

arial for title text in drawing frame

romans for title text in drawing frame
isocp for tables
simplex for normal text, for dimensions

The name of the text style should be identical with the font in AutoCAD (style name =
font name).

5.13.3 Text Size

The following text heights may be used:

2.5 mm Ancillary text and dimensions

3.5 mm General text, dimensions, notes, etc.
5.0 mm Normal titles, drawing numbers
7.0 mm Major titles

5.14 Material Hatching and Shading

The use of hatches is to minimise because of growing the file size substantially.
Shading with solid is permitted. Concrete in section should be shaded (if required)
with solid (colour 252), P.C. Elements in section with hatch prefabricated section II
(lines in angle 45).

5.15 X-Refs

Final documents, which have to be handed over to the client, shall not contain any
X-References.

5.16 Reinforcement Drawings

The reinforcement drawings will be prepared with the application SOFiCAD in its ac-
tual version. To make sure that the objects, which are used with this program will be
shown correct, free object enabler should be used with AutoCAD.

For this project, the standard settings of SOFiCAD are to be used (height of texts,
textfont, circle around item number, etc.

Additional, bar extractions are shown on the drawing. The bar diameters for rein-
forcement are acc. to DIN 1045-1 (dia. 6 to dia. 40 mm). Additional, dia. 18 mm and
dia. 22 mm can be used. Bending radius shall be used acc. BS EN 1992-1, -2. These
settings are fixed in support files LOB.DVB and LOB.TAB of SOFiCAD software.

The bending list will be prepared in english language.
