0 ABSTRACT

Homelessness is a growing problem that still occurs in the year of 2016 and Malaysia
is one of the countries that is currently facing this problem. Legislatively, Malaysias
Destitute Persons Act 1997 had provided for involuntary and voluntary admission to a
welfare home and the arrest of the escaped destitute person but in reality there are still many
of homeless people that are being neglected and live in a state of poverty out there.

As the students of University Kuala Lumpur in Melaka we are very concerned about
this problem and determine to lend some helps to the homeless people that stay in Melaka.
We are planning to build a special fund and organise our own fundraising event to support
this homeless charity activity. A lot of events will be held to raise the fund such as collecting
old clothes, movie night, and futsal/football tournament; there is really no end to the ways in
which we can raise the money.

These brilliant ideas from us to have our own fundraising to help the homeless people
in Melaka will absolutely give a lot of advantages and benefits to the homeless around. We
are determined that we can at least help to support them, spread the love and help those who
are in need and increase the value of humanity in our community. This project can be a good
platform for University of Kuala Lumpur to build a good image and as a linkage to people
who are in need.

2.0 Introduction
1
2.1 Brief review about homelessness in Malaysia

Homelessness is not a new social concern in Malaysia. This social ill is complex and
multidimensional. Homelessness can also loosely be termed as vagrants, people who live
without a home, struggling to earn a living without employment. Homeless, on the other
hand, is generally understood as the situation of not having a proper shelter, private space for
sleeping, washing and other daily activities.

In Malaysia, this concern is placed under the category of displaced and marginalised
groups which falls under the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development
(MWFCD) (Alhabshi and Abdul Manan, 2012) Homelessness is linked between poverty and
social exclusion. People become homeless for many causes. Homelessness can be seen
mostly in Kuala Lumpur.

2.2 Statistics and causes

According to the current statistics in 2010, it showed that there were 1646 homeless
people throughout Malaysia, with 1387 homeless in Kuala Lumpur, 150 in Georgetown, 99 in
Johor Baru, Johor; and 10 in Kuching, Sarawak (Boo Su-Lyn, 2014). Homelessness is due to
many reasons. Some become homeless after retirement, or being unemployed, having severe
injuries, serious illnesses or disabilities that make it harder to earn a living (Indramalar,
2014).

2.3 Problems

The basic problem faced by the homeless is the basic human needs for personal
shelter, warmth and safety, which can be really vital. This includes the safekeeping of
bedding, clothing, hygiene and sanitary necessities, obtaining and storing food in quantities,
reduced access to health care and dental services, limited access to education, not being seen
as incapable for employment, and finally public rejection and discrimination.

Below is the result from a survey that has been conducted:

3.0 OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this project are:

to help people who are in need and to install humanity among students

to improve the communication skills, confidents and the soft skills among students

to give students experience on handling outside activity and how to work efficiently
in a team.

to install sense of gratitude among students and always be grateful with every blessing
no matter how tiny it may seem

The objectives of this project can be attained by full commitment from the participants and
with the aid of other parties involved. The first objective can be attained by taking part in the activities
that will be conducted during the event. Soft skills, confidents and communication skills can be
fostered throughout the activities while having a good understanding about the homeless community.
Handling outside activity is really challenging as the students are required to interact with the
community and this is a good alternative to build a strong belief in ones own abilities. Morality
should not be stepped aside in order to succeed. Sense of gratitude among students is a crucial aspect
to be eyed on as it is also a key to succeed in life. Hence, with the aid of this project, this aspect can
be installed and founded among students. Being grateful is a noble value that should be in oneself and
this can be attained by carrying out this project

5.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the number of homeless statistic has been increased from time to time.
Homeless people can be defined as people who do not have home and typically living on the
streets which dominated by men. There are many reasons why they become homeless. These
can include poverty, unemployment and unaffordable housing. The accurate number of
homeless is unknown as it increasing by years. Now, both non-government and government
organizations in Malaysia are aware of their existence. There are many projects that have
been done and will be implemented soon by the organizations in order to help the homeless.

5.1 RECOMMENDATION

8
There are numerous ways in order to help homeless people. The common way is by
giving them food. But other than food, they also need basic items such as pillow and blanket.
So, our homeless care project is focused on giving them those items. As we always watch,
homeless people use their arms as pillow and withstand the night coldness without anything
covers their bodies. So, by giving the items to them hopefully may help them to feel
comfortable.
