OverviewoftheProblemtoSolve

Inthistutorial,avarietyofANSYSWorkbenchsystemsareusedtoanalyzeconjugateheattransferin
asimpleheatexchanger.

Theheatexchangerinvolvesthecouplingofsolidandfluidmodels.Thesolidmodelconsistsofa
copperalloyheatingcoilandthefluidmodelconsistsofanannularregionwithflowingwaterthat
envelopsthecoil.Aconstantheatgenerationsourceof8.72e+6W/m3isspecifiedforthecoiland
theheatgeneratedismadetoconvectawayfromitssurfacebywaterflowingatanominalspeedof
0.4m/s.

Thetutorialisdividedintotwoparts.Inthefirstpart,theconvectiveheattransferexperiencedbythe
heatingcoilisestimatedandthesteadystatethermalanalysisisexecutedforthesolidmodel.The
resultingtemperaturefromthecoilsurfaceisthenusedtoexecutethefluidanalysis.Inthesecond
partofthetutorial,thethermalanalysisforthesolidmodelisalsoexecuted,howevertheconvective
heattransferobtainedfromthefluidanalysisisusedinsteadoftheoriginalestimate.

Inacasesuchastheonedescribedhere,thereareadvantagestousingonewaydatatransfer
insteadofconjugateheattransferortwowayanalysis.Onewaydatatransferworkswellwhen
separategroupsareperformingthecomputationalfluiddynamicsanalysisandthethermalfinite
elementanalysis.Theindividualsolutionsaresimplerwithaonewayanalysisthantheywouldbe
withatwowaycoupledanalysis.Anotheradvantageofonewaydatatransferisthatitprovidesa
moreflexibleworkflowanythermalvariableofinterestcanbetransferred.Coordinate
transformationscanalsobeappliedwhenusingonewaydatatransfer.
