Jolly Phonics:

What can you do to help your child?

Pick an activity each evening!

Reading:
1. Story, song, sound and action.
2. Card games Snap, The Pairs Game.
3. Blending with My Sounds bag. p-a-t, p-a-s-t-a, n-i-p.
4. Pointing to letters.
5. Miming actions.
6. I-Spy is a good game to play with the children to help them hear the initial
sound in words.
7. Word families (e.g. cat, hat, bat, fat, rat).
8. Word fans.
9. Chopping Game: pink child says ink; mice child says ice; stop child says top.
10. Chopping Game: splash, plash, lash, ash, sh.
11. In the world around us!
Books:
1. Sit beside your child.
2. Let them hold the book and/or turn the page.
3. Wait for them to sound it out. Ask what sound does it start with? What is
the middle sound? What sound is at the end?
4. Can you see the s-u-n? (Emphasise the first sound to make it easier).
5. Ask questions: Is there a s in snake? Is there a s in mouse? Is there a s
in dog? Where is it? (beginning, middle or end?).
6. Rhymes with

Writing:
1. In the air, sandpaper, paint, playdough, sand, stones, on each others backs etc.!
2. Caterpillar c letters (a, d, o, g, q), tall letters (b, d, f, h, k, l, t), some have tails
that go below the line (g, j, p, q, y, f).
3. Dictation: Call out words (that they know all the individual sounds of) and have
them write them down.
4. Word fan words - Look, copy, cover, write and check.
5. Later check punctuation; capital letters, full stops and question marks.
