the major banks active in SME lending

Almost two-thirds of the women

thev had worked for almost eight vears
in their previous jobs, although two out

More than half of the women sur-
veved continued to hold jobs in addi-
tion to running their small businesses,
meaning that for manv their business
is a secondarv, part-time activitv. In-
deed more than 40 per cent dedicated
no more than 10 hours per week to the
business and another 18 per cent not
more than 20 hours per week. Onlv one
in four women worked more than 30
hours each week in their business.
From the data collected it would
appear that most families of the UAE
women entrepreneurs surveved sup-
ported their plans to go into business:
more than 80 per cent indicated that
thev had received either active support
(in terms of advice, etc.) or 'moral sup-
port'. Still, some 12 per cent indicated a
'neutral' or 'discouraging' stand taken
bv their familv members. In some cases
that might actuallv be an understate-
ment as some fathers, brothers and
husbands are not in favour of women
setting up their own businesses.
Interestinglv, when asked what pos-
sible reasons there mav be for the small
number of Emirati women entrepre-
neurs, one in everv six respondents
indicated 'a lack of encouragement bv
husband and/or familv'. In other words,
the women entrepreneurs seemed to
assume that lack of familv support has
more frequentlv been the reason for
keeping other women from entering
business, rather than that thev have
faced such attitudes themselves.
Manv (40 per cent) of the female
business owners followed their own
idea in setting up their businesses. A
similar proportion followed sugges-
tions that thev received from members
of their families or their friends. 'Pre-
vious experience' and 'business ideas
from business training' were minor
sources of ideas.
In the UAE, trading is bv far the
most important economic activitv for

Trading in garments is most common,
also popular.

the customers were expatriates, mainlv
from high-income groups.
