Chess demands visual thinking, chance, endless risk taking, and adapting
to creative opportunities. So does photography. With a combination of
class time devoted to chess, intensive photographic production, critiques,
and analysis, expand the visual options of your practice and teach the
minds eye to see three moves ahead.
Inspired by Arnold Newmans portrait of him, Arno designed the Arnold
Newman Chess Game. The pieces, which he sent to the Arnold in 2006,
are made directly from scans of Minkkinens hands. For a creative twist,
players get to determine which pieces should be black or white.

Maine Media Workshops + College educates and inspires
visual artists and storytellers. The school delivers degree

Midcoast Maines picturesque small towns and coastal land-
scape provide a colorful community and stunning backdrop
for our students and their creative endeavors. The area is
