CHAPTER TWO: OPERATIONS CHEAT SHEET

TRAVEL FORMULAS
The following formulas can be used to determine distance traveled, the
amount of time it took to travel that distance or the acceleration used to
cover that distance in that amount of time if two of the three variables are
known.

D=distance (in meters)

T= time (in seconds)
A=acceleration (in meters/second/second)

2
D=AT /4
T=2√(D/A)
2
A=4D/T
SYSTEM SCALE SENSOR RANGES
The ranges listed below are for detecting a ship-sized object and are
suggestions only.

Sensor/Application Range

Passive EM/detect 3 light hours

Passive EM/identify 2 light seconds

Radar or ladar/detect 8 light seconds

Radar/identify 4 light seconds

Ladar/identify 5 light seconds

Mass detector 3 light seconds

Mass detector/ID drive signature 5 light seconds

Quantum trap 1 light hour

RANGE MODIFIERS
Short 0
Medium -2
Long -4
OTHER MODIFIERS:

To detect a ship at medium range using passive EM sensors TN-2

To detect a ship at long range using passive EM sensors TN-4

LADAR

To detect a ship at long range using passive EM sensors TN-4

MASS DETECTOR

To detect a ship at long range using passive EM sensors TN-4

MASS DETECTOR

To detect a ship at long range using passive EM sensors TN-4

Target is within one-half light second of a terrestrial world TN-2

Target is within one and one-half light seconds of a gas giant TN-2

Target is within one-half light second of a gas giant TN-4

Target is operating a gravity drive with a Move Rating of TN+1

between 3 and 6*

Target is operating a gravity drive with a Move Rating of TN+2

between 7 and 8

Target is a very heavy or capital category ship TN+2

Target is operating a gravity mask and is at medium range TN-2

Target is operating a gravity mask and is at long range TN-4

* Operating a gravity mask at the same time as a gravity drive at these Move Ratings nullifies this penalty.

QUANTUM TRAP

All Tests are made at TN-4; range modifiers do not apply.

Notes:
1. Each doubling of range constitutes a range category; short, medium or long. There is no point blank range.
2. Psionic sensors are always setting unique.
DETECTING ACTIVE SENSORS

ACTIVE SENSOR MEANS OF DETECTION

Radar Military grade passive EM sensor, radar, EM smart

jammer

Ladar Passive EM sensor, EM smart jammer

SENSOR VS. SMART JAMMER

Radar/Ladar Jammer Result(s)

Fail Fail Ship is undetected/contact with ship is lost

Pass Fail Ship is detected/contact with ship is

maintained

Pass Pass Winner is the one with the most degrees of

success; tie goes to the defender

Fail Pass Ship is undetected/contact with ship is lost/

* The information shown applies equally to military and civilian ships. Crew which are responsible for the well
being of passengers are considered part of the operations division.
RANDOM SYSTEM SELECTION

1: Life support

2: Power plant

3: Gravity drive

4: D-Drive

5: Central information system

6: Weapons

7: Communications

8: Sensors/electronic warfare

9 – 12: General maintenance*

* General maintenance is a catch term all for any problem that doesn’t fall into one of the other categories.
SITUATIONAL MODIFIERS FOR SHIPBOARD WEAPONS
Situation Modifier

Ship and target both in None

atmosphere, all weapons

Ship in orbit, target in -3 (See notes below)

atmosphere, projectile weapon

Ship in orbit, target in -2

atmosphere, energy weapon

Ship in orbit, target in None

atmosphere, missile

Ship on surface, target in orbit, Not allowed

projectile weapon

Ship on surface, target in orbit, -2

energy weapon

Ship on surface, target in orbit, -1

missile

Planet has thin atmosphere +2

Planet has hazardous atmosphere -2 (or GM’s call)

Notes:
1. Projectile weapons include gauss guns, mass cannon, needle drivers, rail cannon; munitions dropped from
orbit are included in this category.
2. “Smart” munitions dropped from orbit use a TN-1 modifier instead of the -3 listed in the table.
3. Ignore modifiers when dealing with a planet with no atmosphere.
