History Of The Church
Part Two “The Work Continues”
The
object
of
the
Ins.tute
was
to
afford
the
men
of
Brentwood

the
 means
 of
 social
 interac.on,
 mutual,
 mental
 and
 moral

improvement
 and
 recrea.on.
 Although
 they
 were
 naturally

concerned
about
the
spiritual
welfare
of
the
men,
the
Ins.tute

was
conducted
on
non‐sectarian
and
non‐poli.cal
lines
in
order

that
 all
 may
 feel
 welcome.
 Concerts,
 whist
 drives
 and

parliamentary
 debates
 were
 held
 monthly.
 The
 Ins.tute
 was

open
 daily
 between
 8a.m.
 and
 11p.m.
 billiards,
 draughts
and

other
 games
 being
 available
 together
 with
 a
 good
 supply
 of

daily
papers.
Membership
was
for
men
18
years
and
over
for
a

fee
of
 4
shillings,
(20p)
 per
year.
The
Recrea.on
Hall,
(no.128),

had
a
brass
band
and
the
1st
Brentwood
Boys
Brigade
Company,

which
had
been
formed
in
the
1890’s,
met
there.
Mr
Cook
was

the
Brigades
Commandant
and
it
formed
an
 important
part
of

the
 Cook
 family’s
 work.
 Physical
 training
 and
 drilling
 were

involved
as
was
the
regular
 Sunday
 parade.
 The
annual
 camp

was
popular
and
who
went
depended
on
their
aQendance
at
Bible
Class
and
Drill.
They
were
obviously
fond
of
the

carrot
and
s.ck
approach.
Mr
Cook
was
known
to
tell
the
boys
to
“buck
up”
and
not
play
truant.
Playing
“hookey”

is
obviously
nothing
new!

Mr
 Cook
and
his
colleagues
were
very
concerned
that
all
should
sign
the
Temperance
Pledge.
It
is
apparent
that

drunkenness
was
a
 very
 great
 problem
 at
 that
.me.
Sta.s.cs
quoted
 in
 the
Recrea.on
 Hall
 Magazine,
 (bound

copies
of
which
are
now
lodged
in
the
Brentwood
Reference
Library),
state
that
“three
million
children
are
born

annually
of
drunken
parents.
Half
a
million
of
these
are
born
idiots.
Three
hundred
thousand
are
born
deaf,
dumb

or
blind”.

The
wording
of
the
Total
Abs.nence
Pledge
was
as
follows:
‐
“I
promise,
by
God’s
help,
to
abstain
from

all
intoxica.ng
liquors,
(except
under
medical
order),
as
beverages,
and
to
encourage
others
to
do
the
same”.
They

held
Temperance
Sunday
mee.ngs
when
 people
were
urged
to
sign
 the
pledge,
 however,
not
always
with
 great

success
as
can
be
seen
from
the
February
1911
edi.on
of
the
R.H.
magazine,
when
the
editor
says
that
it
is
“
high

.me
that
we
did
wake
up
to
the
fact
that
England
is
not
a
sober
na.on”.
(Sounds
familiar!).

Mr
Cook’s
family
took

an
ac.ve
part
in
the
work.
His
son
Edward
was
captain
of
 the
Boys
Brigade,
Miss
Marion
Cook,
who
died
in
1910,

played
 the
 violin
 and
 led
 the
orchestra
 and
 Miss
 Lucy
 Muriel
 Cook,(
 who
 was
 always
 known
 as
 Muriel),
 sang.

Mission
was
very
close
to
Mr
Cook’s
heart
and
contribu.ons
were
made
to
the
China
Inland
Mission,
the
Japanese

Evangelis.c
 Band
 ,
 Dr
 Barnardo’s
 Homes
 and
 the
 Salva.on
 Army.
 Another
 work
 was
 the
 Pleasant
 Sunday

A_ernoon,
(P.S.A.),
held
every
Sunday
at
3pm
in
the
Recrea.on
Hall.
This
was
a
na.onal
movement,
formed
in
the

1880’s
which
aQempted
to
keep
in
touch
with
the
working
classes.
Its
moQo
was
“Brief
 Bright
and
Brotherly”.

It

was
held
on
a
Sunday
a_ernoon
so
that
men
would
not
feel
ashamed
to
come
in
their
working
clothes.
It
was
part

entertainment,
part
evangelical
and
part
poli.cal,
although
it
is
doubaul
if
poli.cs
came
into
Mr
Cook’s
version
of

the
P.S.A.
some
of
the
early
Labour
leaders
spoke
at
these

and
in
the

the
P.S.A.
became
the

basis
of
the
Interna.onal

DODD ROAD COMMUNITY CHURCH May/June 2010

This month we have a simple reminder of the importance of friendship, taken from our church
pamphlet: A Caring Church.

In the mid 1980’s Brian Keenan (an Irish academic) left Belfast to go and work in the American
University of Beirut. Shortly after he arrived four Shiite militiamen kidnapped him, this being the
beginning of a four-and-a-half-year ordeal. So how did Brian get through this difficult time?

On his release Keenan spoke of the strength of friendship that he formed with fellow captive
John McCarthy despite them being so different from each other. Brian was an English public-
school educated journalist, and John was, what he would term, a working-class Irish socialist. Yet
on his release Brian made this comment:

“I remember every moment of my time alone, my time with John and with those other captives. And
I remember how we first met, our relationship, the kinds of needs I had of John and he of me. And
how we sought always to give and take, thinking always of each other. And as I review it all, all the
wonder, I see his face stare at mine. I had watched this man grow, become full and in his fullness
enrich me.”

God entered our world of pain and suffering in order to offer the hand of forgiveness and
reconciliation through the death of His own son. The whole purpose of Covenant is that God could
live with us by His Spirit, and bring us into the eternity prepared for those who love Him. In light of
this, friendship has to be the heart of true fellowship. We need to seek to make time for and
understand one another.

Jesus said, “I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”
John 10:10

God knows all about us and still wants to know us. Don’t write off others just because they are not
like you; don’t write off others because they do not deal with issues as quickly as you think they
should. Get alongside them and be a friend. Earn the right to speak into someone’s life and make
sure it is the mind of Christ you are speaking and not your own ideas.

“O LORD, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thought from far away.” Psalm 139:1-2

Connexions
we
have
collected
a
lovely
selec.on
of
quality
toys
that
will
last.
All
the
helpers

are
Grandmas
so
we
hope
that
we
have
a
wealth
of
experience
to
pass
on.

We
 run
 from
1‐3pm
on
a
Monday
 in
term
 .me.
 Each
week
 we
have
a
small
group
of
 Mums
who
enjoy
 a

relaxed
.me,
where
they
can
chat
and
support
each
other
while
their
children
play.
At
2:30
we
have
a
music

session
and
get
out
the
percussion
 instruments.
 The
children
and
Mums
enjoy
 singing
nursery
 rhymes
and

making
lots
of
noise!

If
there
is
anyone
who
would
like
to
pop
in
and
see
what
we
get
up
 to
and
 have
a
cup
 of
 tea
with
us,
you

would
be
most
welcome.

Margaret
Dent.

Feelings
and
the
Word

Summer
Fete.

11am
‐3pm.
For
feelings
come
and
feelings
go,
And
feelings
are
deceiving;
My
warrant
is
the
Word
of
God,
Naught
else
is
worth
believing.

Though
all
my
heart
should
feel
condemned,
For
want
of
some
sweet
token.
There
is
one
greater
than
my
heart,
Whose
word
cannot
be
broken.

I'll
trust
in
God's
unchanging
word
Til
soul
and
body
sever.
For
though
all
things
shall
pass
away,
His
Word
shall
stand
forever.
