Learning Experience Activity

Age

Preschool

Intended Goal/s

The intended goal for this activity is for the child to learn how to use various materials in writing

skills. Another goal for this activity is for the child to better understand how to write out letters

and words in a creative way.

Materials Needed

White Construction Paper

White Wax Crayons

Newspaper

Water Soluble Paint (Watercolor Paint or Tempera Paint)

Processes for Preparation and Introduction

If you are focusing on a specific letter from the alphabet, base this activity on that letter.

Otherwise, the teacher may use a variety of words, letters and small sentences. Provide an

example in front of the class on how the words (or letters) appear to magically show up on the

paper. This activity can be done in small groups, in the Art area, or as a class. Its going to

depend on the amount of children in your classroom.

Magic Messages:

First, draw the letter (or words/small sentences) on the white construction paper, using the white

crayon. To get the children excited, talk about how the blank piece of paper is magical. Put

down newspaper (in your Art area or available room for this activity). The child then paints over

the paper with the paint colors of their choices. The wax crayons provide a paint-proof type of

layering of wax onto the paper. Once the paint is added in, the areas that are drawn on appear

blank. This is a great opportunity for the children to use Language/Literacy skills in a creative

manner!

Teaching Strategies

As the teacher, you will be demonstrating how to create the magic messages and also

encouraging them while they are creating their own.

Explanation of Developmental Appropriateness

This activity is developmentally appropriate for Preschoolers because it uses various skills that

they are able to perform for the activity. In example, one of the skills they are using is fine motor,

as they are practicing writing just in a more creative way!
