D A I LY P I C T O - J O U R N A L

Label your paper Daily Picto-Journal. The upper right

corner should be your name, date, and period.
Prompt
Imagine what would happen to Mt. Lam Lam if a forest
fire burns all the trees.
Will the land stay bare or will something start growing
there? What will grow and how will it get there?
Use your imagination. You can either draw a picture or
explain using words.

Submitting at the end of the class

CHAPTER 3.
COMMUNITIES
AND BIOMES MS. JIMIN CHEON | BIOLOGY
SECTION 3.1

COMMUNITIES
OBJECTIVES

After this lesson, I will be able to

define a limiting factor.

identify examples of limiting factors.

explain range of tolerance both in words and in

illustrations.

differentiate the types of ecological succession.

define a pioneer species.

HOW MANY FISH CAN LIVE

THERE?
L I M I T I N G FA C T O R S

Any biotic or
abiotic factor that
limits the
population from
growing too large.

TOLERANCE

Ability of an organism to survive biotic or abiotic factors

RANGES OF TOLERANCE

Range of changes in biotic and abiotic factors that

organisms can withstand.

Often times a bell curve

Carrying capacity = highest at optimum range

ACTIVITY 1
In a group of 4, you will be assigned an organism.
Imagine that you are the organism.

In 5 minutes, discuss and write:

2 important limiting factors

Optimal range, stressed range, and lethal range for

both factors.

Be ready to share your response to the class. Every

member needs to speak.

ECOLOGICAL SUCCESSION

Natural changes and species replacement that take place in the

communities.
2 types:
Primary Succession
Secondary Succession
P R I M A RY S U C C E S S I O N

Takes place on land where no organisms exist.

Soil develops over time.

S E C O N D A RY S U C C E S S I O N

The changes that take place after a community is

disrupted by natural disasters or human actions.

The soil is already there, so it is quicker than primary.

TYPHOON VOLCANO

EARTHQUAKE FOREST FIRE

PIONEER SPECIES

First species in an area.

Often times mosses.

ONLY in primary succession.

CLIMAX COMMUNITY

Stable, mature community that undergoes little or no

change in species.
SUCCESSION FLASH
ACTIVITY 2

Think-Pair-Share

Pair up with an elbow partner

Discuss similarities and differences between primary

and secondary succession.

Pairs will be randomly chosen to share their response

to the class.
There is no such thing as a dumb question.
