PROJECTS/PRESENTATIONS

Name: FLEXURAL AND IMPACT CHARACTERISATION OF RAPID

PROTOTYPED, ABS PROTOTYPES.

The project has been funded by The Institution of Engineers (India)

Technical Department, 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata-700020 under R&D
Grant-in-Aid scheme 2012-13, Ref No. IEI/ /2013-14/116, Sep 24, 2013
Description: The aim is to spread the use of flexural and impact
characterization of ABS-Rapid prototyping technology (RP) into mechanical
engineering. In the development of a new product it is invariably necessary to
produce a single prototype of a designed product or system before the allocation
of large amount of money to new production facilities or assembly lines. The cost
is very high and production tooling takes considerable time to prepare. The
technology which considerably speeds the interactive product development
process is the concept and practice of Rapid Prototyping (RP) also called Solid
Freeform Fabrication (SFF).
Rapid Prototyping is being used since its origin by designers in different
field as product design, automobile industry, medical applications, arts, and it
has been proved that it is an essential tool in any design process. The designer
has the possibility of building the scale model in very few hours directly from the
CAD system. A methodology of work has been defined, in which has been
described the use of three dimension CAD software in the design stage. As case
study, some models have been built to illustrate the effectiveness of this
technology in the creation of scale models with complex surfaces of mechanical
parts.
The rapid prototyping (RP) process is being used widely with great
potential for rapid manufacturing of functional parts. The flexural and impact
testing on Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) Thermoplastic are carried out
in order to find out the major mechanical properties such as flexion and impact
(notch toughness) characterization of the sample ABS material (prototype). The
RP process involves translation of the CAD file to STL format followed by slicing
of the model into multiple horizontal layers, each of which is reproduced
physically in making the prototype.
Name: MAG-LEV USING SUPER CONDUCTORS.
Description: MAGLEV VEHICLES are actually Magnetically Levitated vehicles,
although maglev technology advanced, its basic principles are relatively simple
and readily understood. These are high speed vehicles that are lifted by the
magnetic repulsion, and propelled along an elevated guide way by powerful
magnets attached to the vehicle. It is a contact less, frictionless vehicle which
does not need an engine nor do they burn fuel. The applications of maglev are
vast and developments in the fields of MAGLEV Trains, MAGLEV Vehicles, Sky-
Trans may be the future.
