ANCIENT EGYPTIAN CHAIR
Crest rail a carved or shaped
top rail of a the back of a chair.

Raking back slant or raking

back supported by vertical
uprights or slats

Stiles a vertical framing and

paneling element to chairs.

Double Cove Seat - made of

woven rush or cane curving up
at the edges with a concaved
center.

Leg style - Animal legs w/ a

paw
Foot style resting on a
Drum (which were a sort of lift to
raise the chair from the dirt and
straw ground) were the common
form observed in Egyptian chairs
and beds. The animals included
lion, bull, and dog. Like most
animals, the dog had religious
connotations; it was protector of
the soul of the deceased. The
legs transferred the strength of
the animal to the person seated
in the chair.
Figure 1
Stretcher - a horizontal wooden
beam tying the vertical legs as a
frame or support.

INTA107 Wk1_A2 Hannah Butcher

ANCIENT GREEK KLISMOS

Concave Crest rail was

one of the three major chair
backs, among barrel and
tub. The concave crest rail
is rounded at each end and
carved underneath with
opposing S-shaped curves.

Mortise-tenon joint used

to join pieces of wood with
a cavity cut into a timber to
receive a tenon, creating a
simple yet strong form.

Leg style there were three

main leg forms in Grecian
design: saber, column and
pilaster, and dog leg with
paw foot. In this case, the
leg style is that of the saber.
The saber leg was taken
from the sweeping shape of
a sword - perhaps another
Figure 2 symbol of power.

INTA107 Wk1_A2 Hannah Butcher

ROMAN LECTUS

Fulcrum slanted structures

at the ends to better
accommodate pillows.

Disk turning Roman legs

were distinguished in disc
turned designs, massive
animal legs with paw foot,
and goat leg. Goat was a
sacrificial animal during
ancient times, but how its leg
form came to be used in
household furniture is yet
unknown. This design was
achieved by using a tool to
carve the wood while it spun,
instead of being hand-
carved.

Support at floor a beam

laid on the floor connecting
two legs offered more
support.

Other unique details: typically

Figure 3 made of stone, wood, and
leather.
