Osmosis
Membrane transport refers to the process that substance move through membrane .
There are main two types of transport which are active transport and passive transport.
Active transport requires ATP while Passive transport does not require ATP. There are many
different types Passive transport such as osmosis and diffusion. (Andrew Rader Studios,
n.d.).Molecule move from low to high concentration with ATP involved it called Active
transport. One study found that Diffusion can be a simple diffusion or facilitated diffusion
and both will separate until both side equally. ( BBC, 2014). Simple diffusion is movement
of small substance from high to low concentration and they will separate equally though
channel protein in cell membrane without ATP ( Simple diffusion, n.d.).Facilitated is when
molecule is large or ions they use carrier protein or channel protein to pass though and they
is not require ATP in this as well. Osmosis is only focuses on movement water across
membrane move from high concentration of water to low concentration of water. the cell will
shrink when they are higher solute outside the cell and it called hypertonic solution and the
cell will swell when there is lower solute outside the cell it call hypotonic solution and cell will
stay the same when it equal solute in both side it call isotonic solution. ( BBC, 2014 )

In the experiment, we will measure the mass of potatoes and jellies before placing
jelly and potato in distilled water and concentrated salt solution. Potatoes and jellies act like
the cells while distilled water and concentrated salt solution represent hypotonic solution and
hypertonic solution. For isotonic, we put the material inside an empty beaker, which act like
the control. Lastly, we will measure the mass, volume, length, height, and weight in
percentage as well as their size after one hour. The hypothesis is that the material soaked
into distilled water should shrink, and the materials soaked into concentrated salt solution
should swell.
