What is Adipocyte?
Adipocyte
Adipocyte (fat cell) - a connective cell that has a specialized function which is the
synthesis and storage of fat.

Adipocyte is very important to our body in many ways:

maintaining energy balance
storing calories in the form of lipids
using energy sources in order to response to hormone
helping the cells to send the chemical signal to the other cell
Location of Adipocyte
beneath the skin
between muscles
around the kidneys and heart
behind the eyeballs
abdominal membranes

Why Fat Cells Are Important?
- Body cells need to get some fat
- plays important and several roles
- long term storage : if cell is removed, we would probably died
- General thoughts : Fats are bad --- WRONG!
 Types of Adipocyte
1. White Adipose Tissue/Adipocyte
(WAT)
- found commonly in our body
- consist of a single huge lipid droplet
- contain only few numbers of
mitochondria
- nucleus is located near the cell border
- cytoplasm surrounds the edge of the
cell
- Functions :
- store energy
- body protection and insulation
Types of Adipocyte
2. Brown Adipose Tissue/Adipocyte
(BAT)

- found in newborn babies and tiny

mammals
- consist of small several lipid droplets
- contain lots of mitochodria ; brown color
- nucleus is located at the center of the
cell
- cytoplasm surrounds throughout the cell
- Functions :
- heat production
- maintain body temp
- burn calories
 White Adipocyte Brown Adipocyte

- single huge lipid droplet - many small lipid droplets

- nucleus is located near cells border - nucleus is located in the middle of the cell

- few mitochodria - lots of mitochondria

- cytoplasm surrounds the edge of the cell - cytoplasm surrounds throughout the cell

- other organelles locate on the verge near - other organelles locate separated
the cell membrane

- contain glycerol and fatty acids - contain glycerol and fatty acids

Beige Fat Cell
- special type of energy-burning cell transformed from WAT,

usually when exercise.

- found in humans neck and upper chest

- Obtain BAT properties ;

- more mitochondria and lipid droplets

- more synthesis of UCP1

- faster the cellular respiration rate, but to release heat

 Diseases related to the fat cells
- Type 2 diabetes (Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) : Adipose tissue produce Adipocytokine

called resistin (resistance to insulin)

- Obesity : Adipose tissue produce Adipocytokine called Leptin which is a satiety hormones used to

control our eating, they sent signal to brain that we need more food or need to exercise.
Eating more : think we have to eat because we are starving
Reduce energy expenditure : think we need to conserve energy and make
we feel more lazier
