TEST PAPER

(General Physics)
1. The main scale of a screw gauge reads in millimeter. The cap of the instrument is divided into 100 equal
parts. Find the diameter of a wire if no division on the main scale is completed and the cap has been
moved through 37 divisions, the zero error being 3 division.
2. The pitch of a screw gauge is 0.5 mm and there are 100 divisions on it circular scale. The instrument
reads +2 divisions when nothing is put in-between its jaws. In measuring the diameter of a wire, there are
8 divisions on the main scale and 83rd division coincides with the reference line.
(a) Calculate the least count of the instrument
(b) Find the diameter of the wire.

3. The pitch of a screw gauge is 1mm and there are 100 divisions on the cap. When nothing is placed in-
between its jaws, it reads 5 divisions. When a wire is held there, the reading on the main scale is 2 mm
and 69 divisions on its cap.

(b) If the length of the wire is 20 cm, determine its volume

4. The dimensions of a rectangle are measured with a scale of least count 1 mm. The length is measured as
l = 9.2 cm and the breadth is measured as 3.3 cm.
(a) Determine the uncertainty in each dimension of the rectangle
(b) Also, determine the uncertainty in its area.

7. Area of an annular ring is to be calculated by measuring external radius r 1 = 3.07 + 0.01mm and internal
resistance r2 = 4.00 + 0.2 mm. Calculate maximum error in measurement of area ?

8. Length of an iron rod is measured by using screw gauge. Least count of main scale is 1 mm and no of
division in sphereometre is 200. When no object is placed in between then 70 th division of sphereometre
coincides with main scale. When iron rod is placed in between the jaws then 3.7 cm is measured on main
scale and 6th division of spherometer coincides with main scale. What is the length of rod.

SOLUTION

1
1. L.C. = 0.01mm
100
Zero correction = + N.C. = +3 L.C.
= 3 0.01 = 0.03 mm

2. Given P = 0.5 mm
zero correction = -N.C
= -2 (least count)

Least count = 0.005mm
100
zero correction = - 2 0.005 = 0.010
= 0.01 mm
main scale reading = 8 0.5 = 4mm
C.S. R. = 83 0.005 = 0.415 mm
Take reading = M.S.R. + C.S.R. + zero corrective
4 + 0.415 + (-2 0.005)
= 4.415 -0.010
= 4.405 mm

3. P = 1mm
P 1
Least count = 0.01mm
Division 100
zero correction = +N.C. = +5 0.01 = 0.05 mm
M.S.R. = 2 mm
C.S.R. = 69 (0.01) = 0.69 mm
true reading = M.S.R. + C.S.R. + zero correction
= 2 mm + 0.69 + 0.05
= 2.74 mm

4. (a) Since the uncertainty in the measured value is taken to be half of the least count of the
measuring instrument, therefore, the length and breadth may be written as
l = 9.20 0.05 cm = 9.20 0.5%
and b = 3.30 0.05 cm = 3.30 0.2%
thus, the uncertainty in the length and breadth are 0.5% and 0.2% respectively.

(b) The area of the rectangle may be calculated as

A = lb = (9.20 3.30) (0.5 + 0.2)
or A = 30.36 0.7%
or A = 30.36 0.7 cm2.
