LLI Training and Implementation Overview:

After reviewing data of our special education and enhanced reading class students over the last three years, it
was determined to make a curriculum change in their instruction. Data had remained stagnant for the last three
years. Growth was on average 50%, and as a district team we knew this could be improved. All students can
meet their growth goal. After reviewing a couple curriculum choices, the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy
Intervention Program was determined to best meet the needs of our students. In the first year of
implementation, our SLD, DCD and Interventionist were trained on the curriculum by our Elementary
Instructional Coach and myself. We ensured that they had a basic understanding of how the curriculum worked
and then practiced giving the Benchmark reading assessment to one another by watching video training. As
the school year progressed, I met with all three of the instructors often to coach, model and observe them
using LLI. We benchmarked students in the fall, winter and spring that year. Over 80% of the students showed
one years worth of growth as measured by the LLI Benchmark System. We were very pleased with our MCA
growth last spring as well. Our SLD teacher went from 50% to 79% growth on the reading assessment and our
DCD teacher went from 45% to 73% growth! In just one year of implementation the teachers felt even more
confident in their abilities to match students to their reading levels and teach strategies that would develop
confident readers who can reach their growth goals and beyond!

In 2016-2018 we implemented the LLI reading curriculum to two more teachers.

Our EBD teacher is not trained on LLI instruction and one of our ADSIS
instructional paraprofessionals also is trained on LLI. We have extended the
curriculum to meet the needs of our lowest 10% of students as measured on
reading comprehension assessments. We continue to provide ongoing staff
development through on site training, modeling, coaching and observing. The
Special education department and our interventionist also meet during their
Professional Learning Community meetings to share strategies and look at their
data to make instructional changes as needed.
I have been directly involved in this entire process, from brainstorming, to implementing, to analyzing the data.
I have worked with our District Teaching and Learning Director and Special Education Director in ordering the
proper curriculum for each room. We have met as a leadership team to ensure this process has been smooth
and meets the needs of our students.
