Purpose:
The purpose of this laboratory experiment is to prove and understand the process of
osmosis in hypertonic and hypotonic solution by putting potato and jelly into both solutions
and observe the result.

Hypothesis:

Question : How will soaking the jelly in distilled water affect the size of the jelly?
Hypothesis : If the distilled water affect the jelly by osmosis, then the size of jelly will
increase

Question : How will soaking the jelly in concentrated salt water affect the size of the
candy?
Hypothesis : If the salt water affect the jelly by osmosis, then the size of jelly will decrease

Question : How will soaking the potato in distilled water affect size?
Hypothesis : If the distilled water affect the potato by osmosis, then the size of potato will
increase

Question : How will soaking the potato in concentrated salt water effect size?
Hypothesis : If the salt water affect the potato by osmosis, then the size of potato will
decrease

Material list :
6 Beaker
3 jellies
3 potatoes
Distiled water
concentraed salt water
knife
weighing paper
marker
lab coat
2 cylinder
chopping block
weighing balance

Methods:
Collect the materials that your group needs (3 Jelly and Half a Potato)
Use the knife to cut the potato into 3 equal pieces
Use the electronic balance to find the mass of your jelly. Remember to lay down a piece of
weighing paper and set to zero.
Record your data
Record descriptive observations about the jelly prior to the experiment.
Measure the initial volume of the jelly and the potato and record your data.
Fill your 1st beaker half way with distilled water. Put one of your jelly into the beaker. Set the
beaker aside for one hour. Label the beaker using marker.
Fill your 2st beaker with concentrated salt solution half way. Put your 2nd jelly into that
beaker. Set beaker aside for one hour. Label the beaker using marker.
Put your 3rd jelly into an empty beaker without putting anything in it. That should be your
control.
Put the 4th beaker half way with distilled water. Put one of your potato pieces into the
beaker. Set the beaker aside for one hour. Label the beaker.
Put the 5th beaker half way with concentrated salt solution half way. Put your second potato
pieces into that beaker and set it aside for an hour. Label the beaker.
Place your last piece of potato pieces into the last beaker, empty. That is your control for the
potato. Label the beaker.
Make sure you label all the beakers distilled water or concentrated salt solution with
some markers.
After one hour, come back and look at each of the beakers and record the data volume and
mass of both the jellies in two beaker and both the potato in two other beakers.
Also record the descriptive data for what the jelly and the potato look like now after being
soaker for an hour.
Calculate the percent change in the size of each jelly and potato
d. Percent change in volume
e. Percent change in mass

Analyzing Results Questions:
1. What happened to the jellies after being soaked in distilled water and salt water for an
hour? Why? Be descriptive and detailed in your answer. Use your knowledge of membrane
transport

As a result jelly that been soaked in distilled water for an hour became bigger and jelly that
soak in salt water for an hour shrink. Jelly in distilled water became bigger because water is
hypotonic and jelly is hypertonic so water move from area with lower concentration (distilled
water) to the area with higher concentration (jelly). Jelly in salt water became smaller also
because of the osmosis law, in this case jelly is hypotonic and water is hypertonic so water
escape jelly making it become smaller.

2. What happened to the potato after being soaked in distilled water and salt water for an
hour? Be descriptive and detailed in your answer. Use your knowledge of membrane
transport.

As a result potato that been soaked in distilled water for an hour became slightly bigger and
jelly that soak in salt water for an hour become slightly smaller. Potato in clean water
became slightly bigger because water is hypotonic and potato is hypertonic so water move
from area with lower concentration (distilled water) to the area with higher concentration
(potato). Potato in salt water became slightly smaller also because of the osmosis law, in this
case potato is hypotonic and water is hypertonic so water escape potato making it become
smaller. The reason that potato only have slight effect because potato cell have cell wall
which support its structure so it doesnt look as swell or shrink as much as jelly
Conclusion

In conclusion, the experiment shows that both samples shrink in hypertonic solution
(salt water) , while both samples swell in hypotonic solution (distilled water) because
of the osmosis process.
