The Big Review - Burgers

March 2017

This review will help you to remember everything that we looked at this term. From boxplots and
histograms to scatterplots. From mean and standard deviation, or median and IQR, you will have the
chance to review. You will also have a chance to work with scatterplots and linear models, make some
judgements about variables, and practice some writing. Remember, the main idea is to tell the story of
the data. The rubric is at the end of this document.

Investigation 1

Heres a set of data about some fast food burgers.

Company Burger Calories Fat (g) Protein (g) Sodium (mg)

Burger King Hamburger 290 12 15 560
Burger King Whopper 670 39 28 1020
Carl's Jr. Kid's Hamburger 520 18 25 1040
Carl's Jr. Famous Star 590 32 24 910
Elevation Burger Hamburger 510 26 41 710
Elevation Burger Half the Guilt Burger 480 19 31 1150
Five Guys Little Hamburger 480 28 23 380
Five Guys Bacon Cheeseburger 920 62 51 1310
McDonald's Hamburger 260 9 13 530
McDonald's Quarter Pounder 420 18 24 730
McDonald's Big Mac 560 30 25 1010
Wendy's Jr. Hamburger 280 9 15 590
Wendy's Classic Single 420 20 25 880

1. Circle/highlight one of the following sets of variables. Make sure it is different from everyone at your
table.

Calories vs fat calories vs protein calories vs sodium

fat vs protein Fat vs sodium protein vs sodium

2. Insert the boxplot and histogram for both of your variables (should be a total for 4 graphs).
3. Analyze the following for your set of variables independently.

Shape Center (mean, median, mode)

Cal Skewed left. Cal 492.30769230769, 480, 171.06696152514

Pro Skewed left. Pro 26.153846153846, 25, 10.037208881466

Spread (range, IQR, standard deviation) Outliers (for single variables)

Cal 220 Cal 260, 280, 290, 920
Pro 10.5 Pro 13, 15, 15, 41, 51

4. Insert the scatterplot for your two variables.

5. What is the equation for the line of best fit? (use the names of the variables instead of using x and y)

protein_grams = 0.049406 calories + 1.83112

6. Using your equation as a model. Ask Jenn for your prompt!

7. What is the correlation coefficient? Is the correlation positive or negative? Is the correlation strong,
medium, weak, none at all?

Weak positive.

8. Are there any outliers in this scatterplot?

Yes

9. Are any of the outliers (any of the 4 types of outliers) Influential Points? If so, which burger, and why
do you think its influential?

The five guys bacon cheeseburger is an influential point.
