ELECTRONICS VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER

Standard Referred: IEC 60044-7

Introduction:
Instrument transformers are used to step down the
current/ voltage from higher level to lower level to
supply to measuring instruments to measure high
voltages ,current ,power, energy etc., and to supply
protection equipments to protect the power
system. Generally the order of these secondary level
voltages are 63.5/110v and secondary currents are
5/1 amps. With present art of technology the digital
instruments and numerical relays are used in power
system in which microprocessor is used as the core
component and such a high level voltage and
currents are not necessary .In addition these
instruments/ relays are supplied with external
auxiliary power supply and hence there is no need
of any sort of power required from these
instrument transformers.
Electronics transformer is an innovative product to
match the present art of technology in which
proportional current or voltage signals of very
minute values are derived from the high voltage
/current part through sensors and supplied to the
electronics instruments. By going for these latest art
of technology, many problems associated with 25KV VOLTAGE SENSOR

conventional instrument transformers are

eliminated. This is tremendous advantages for various sectors in
many ways.
This literature will describe about electronic voltage transformer.

Description:
Megawin make electronics voltage transformer consists of either
single or multiple voltage sensors with multiple input secondary
convertor unit inbuilt in measurement and protection device
(Numerical relay) energised by separate auxiliary voltage.
Presently available type references for secondary convertor with
measurement and protection suitable for three phase inputs is
M735C or four inputs is MB770C and voltage sensor type references
are many depends on the voltage rating and in-door or outdoor
applications. The type reference for the highest voltage-25kv
outdoor sensor is MVSO-25000-1.
Combining secondary convertor within numerical relay has major
advantage as it reduces one more electronics element and hence
total component counts and hence improves reliability factor. The
major advantage is the secondary voltage is part of the numerical
relay. The sensor error and the electronics part errors together
compensated inside the firmware by calibration and error
compensating factor.

Burden, Rated output (Sn), secondary limiting current: Fixed and
decided by secondary convertor (Numerical relay), which is supplied
by separated auxiliary source.
Secondary Short circuit withstand capacity: If the terminals
connecting the voltage sensor to secondary converting units are
shorted by accident for any amount of time will not damage either
the sensor or the secondary convertor equipment.

Accuracy class: 3
Voltage error is less than 3% -the error between the actual primary
voltage and the same measured, shown, used and sent to remote
end by the numerical relay.
(As the output voltage of 2/3 is inside the secondary convertor the
error is measured with output display of primary voltage itself in the
numerical relay)
Phase displacement error-is mainly applicable for energy
measurement the same is compensated inside firmware for those
units in which energy is measured.

Secondary Short circuit with stand capacity:

If the terminals connecting the voltage sensor to secondary
converting units are shorted by accident for any amount of time
will not damage either the sensor or the secondary convertor
equipment. In fact shorting the terminals when not connected to
secondary equipment is preferred.

Open circuit secondary voltage of the sensor:
If the terminals of the cable connecting the voltage sensor to
secondary converting units is kept open (without connecting the
secondary convertor) and rated voltage applied to primary will
result in higher secondary voltage of the order hundreds of volts.
For example for 25kv sensor this will be around 150v a.c ,but
short circuit will result in micro amps current only.
Secondary voltage:
The 2/3 =1.1547 volts secondary , when rated primary voltage is
applied, is inside the secondary convertor. The Numerical Relay
will measure this and show display of the primary voltage value
directly after conversion and same is used for protection and
remote end communication.
Transient performance: Any transient while switching on or off
with trap charges on line will not exceed the peak twice the rated
voltage. Our sensors are designed to meet this specification.
Moreover there is no magnetic circuit connected to the secondary
in our design and hence no secondary induced oscillations are
expected.
Cable: The cable is single core shielded coaxial cable of suitable
length (10 meters for outdoor application) connecting the
primary voltage sensor to the secondary equipment with suitable
terminals .These terminals and cable are part of supply of the
electronics voltage transformer.
Terminal screws for High voltage terminals: M8 for 25000 KV
sensor
Terminal screws for Earthing: M8 for 25000KV sensor.
Mounting: 4 holes of at suitable pitch are provided on the base
for mounting using bolts.
Temperature Range: -10C to 70 C for the outdoor sensor and
-10C to 55C for the Numerical relay.
