Ammonium chloride-catalyzed one-pot synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-

ones under solvent-free conditions

1. What is the purpose of your compound? How is it useful?

The compound is 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones. It is an organic compound that is one of

ingredients uses for making of medicine because it is antitumor, antibacterial, antiviral and
anti-inflammatory activities. This compound was usually synthesis with expensive method.
This experiment used Ammonium chloride which is inexpensive and efficient as a crystal to
form 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones.

2. What is the starting material to make your product?

1. C7H5NO3 > 4-nitrobenzaldehyde (0.30 g, 2 mmol)

Molar mass: 151.12 g/mol
2. C6H10O3 > Ethyl acetoacetate (0.26 g, 2 mmol)
Molar mass: 130.14 g/mol
3. CH4N2O > Urea (0.18 g, 3 mmol)
Molar mass: 60.06 g/ mol

3. What is the % yield given in the paper? 83% yield

4. How many grams of product were made? 0.51 g of product

5. How many moles of product were made?

The product or 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones = AC

0.51 g AC x 1mol AC = 1.67x10-3 mole of product

305.15 g AC

6. How many grams of product would be produced if they obtained a 95% yield?
Limiting reagent = 4-nitrobenzaldehyde (C7H5NO3) = 0.002 mole

Theoretical yield

0.002 mol C7H5NO3 x 1 mol AC x 305.15 g AC = 0.61 g of product

1 mol C7H5NO3 1 mol AC

If obtained 95% yield

95% = actual yield x 100 = 0.5795 g of product

0.61 g of product
7. If they started with 5 grams of starting material, how much product could they have
theoretically made?
Molar mass of product: 305.15 g/mol
The product or 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones = AC

5 g C7H5NO3 x 1 mole C7H5NO3 x 1 mol AC = 0.033 mol AC < limiting reagent

151.12 g C7H5NO3 1 mol C7H5NO3

5 g C6H10O3 x 1 mole C6H10O3 x 1 mol AC = 0.038 mol AC

130.14 g C6H10O3 1 mol C6H10O3

5 g CH4N2O x 1 mole CH4N2O x 1 mol AC = 0.083 ml AC

60.06 g CH4N2O 1 mol CH4N2O

0.033 mol AC x 305.15 g AC = 10.1 g AC

1 mole AC

Answer: If started with 5 grams of starting material, 10.1 g 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones

will be make.

8. If we needed to make 10 grams of product, how much starting material would we need to
use?
The product is 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones = AC
The starting material: 4-nitrobenzaldehyde (C7H5NO3) is limiting reagent

83% = 10 g x 100
T
T = 12 g.

12g AC x 1 mol AC x 1 mol C7H5NO3 x 151.12 g C7H5NO3 = 5.943 g C7H5NO3

305.15 g AC 1mol AC 1 mol C7H5NO3

12g AC x 1 mol AC x 1 mol C6H10O3 x 130.14 g C6H10O3 = 5.118 g C6H10O3

305.15 g AC 1mol AC 1 mol C6H10O3

12g AC x 1 mol AC x 1 mol CH4N2O x 60.06 g CH4N2O = 2.362 g CH4N2O

305.15 g AC 1mol AC 1 mol CH4N2O

Answer: If we needed to make 10 grams of product, starting material we need is 5.9 g of 4-

nitrobenzaldehyde, 5.1 g of ethyl acetoacetate and 2.4 g of urea.
