EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Human trafficking has truly become a global threat to women and children worldwide .In our country it is

an injustice that affects millions of people every year. Most of the significant victims are from Asia and

Pacific region. According to International Labour Organization 55 percent of all trafficking victims and

89 percent of sex trafficking victims are women and girls. The report basically revolves around our

experience in the non-profit organization named Odanadi Seva trust.

Odanadi Seva trust is a social, non-governmental organization which has been working for the rescue,

rehabilitation, reintegration and empowerment of trafficked and sexually exploited women and children.

The trust from its origin is working for creating awareness against human trafficking. The trust has

undertaken over a dozen rescue operations. Nearly 400 girls were rescued in the state of Karnataka and

the perpetrators of this traffic have been brought to book.

The vision of the trust is Justice to the Neglected and Empowerment of the Weak and Equality of

Opportunity to All. During the SRP week we learned how this trust works. Primarily after discussing

with the officials for a week, our team had a tremendous amount of respect and gratitude to the trust and

the people who are working for this trust.

While working for Odanadi Trust, we were assigned with various task like creating awareness among

different sectors i.e. corporate sector and educational sectors. Our team prepared presentation for the

corporates and met with different people to create as much awareness that was possible. We visited

various companies to create awareness about how Yoga can stop trafficking. Some of the issues like lack

of funds and lack of awareness among common people were identified.

In the first part of the report it gives a brief understanding of Odanadi trust and how the organization is

working. The report also contains various case study that was taken by our team. The second part of the

report contains individual students experiences with the organization and how their world view has

changed because of the 6 days in closely working in an NGO. And this also contain how the individuals

have been sensitised to the whole issue.

History of the Organization

Odanadi was founded in August 1992, by fellow journalists and friends, Stanly and Parashuram, when

they were investigating a story on the streets of Mysore. They came across a prostituted woman,

Radhamma. That encounter was to change their lives forever. She eventually became a prominent

womens rights campaigner and her son is now a lawyer in Bangalore, sadly, she died a few years ago of

AIDS but her legacy lives on through the thousands of women whose lives she helped change.

The two journalists then left their jobs and built Odanadi from the ground up, and dedicated their lives to

combat human trafficking, gender-based violence and child exploitation. The path chosen by the directors

have never been easy, but both are committed to the prevention of human suffering, regardless of caste,

religion, creed, gender, background or geographical boundary. Since then Odanadi has grown over the

Activities done

Yoga stops trafficking

Yoga Stops Traffick is a one day, worldwide community yoga event run by volunteers to raise awareness

about human trafficking and much needed money to support its victims and anyone can take part. The

funds raised helped provide a roof over the head of 95 children at Odanadi Seva Trust rehabilitation

centres. Yoga Stops Traffick participants helped pay for food, electricity, running water and contributed to

the salaries of 22 social workers, psychotherapists, administrative and educational staff. For the Odanadi

residents Yoga Stops Traffick means a sense of belonging. They feel they have relatives and friends

across the globe who love them and want the best for them. When the name of Odanadi is taken to

countries across the world, it starts a healing process.

We have started approaching corporates and educational institutes to create awareness about human

trafficking. We gave short presentations to a few batch of students and faculties in two colleges and made

them understand how the entire program planned on Sunday will help reduce the ill effects of human

trafficking and also requested them to actively participate and make it a success. The group also met
Head and Representatives of various major corporates in Mysore and sought help from them for creating

awareness amongst all their employees.

Fund raising for Odanadi

The group have approached HR heads of few companies in Mysore and they agreed to carry this message

to their employees and convincing them to seriously contribute to the planned event. The heads also

agreed on communicating this information to other departments and make the best into the contribution.

The heads have also agreed to take this matter to their higher officials for discussion regarding

contribution for the event from the company as a whole.

Reservation for Deprived class of children in educational institution

The common practice of all educational institutions is to include all the personal details and also the

reservation of seats is mainly based on the caste/religion of the child seeking the education. But there are

talented children amongst the deprived category who have missed their right for education as they failed

to fill the above mentioned details (No father name, no religion, and no caste). To edge this problem, the

group have approached different educational institutions to come up with a solution so as to help the

talented to get their needs.

Surveys, interviews, field activities undertaken by the students during the

stay

Interview with counsellor Vinutha

We had the opportunity to interact with the counsellor of Odanadi Mysore, which gave us insights about

the actual problems faced by the victims who were brought to Odanadi from different parts of Karnataka.

The group was able to interact with Vinutha for around two hours and collected different scenarios which

the organisation had been facing over the past decades.

Odanadi, after rescuing the victims from various unexpected attacks and situations brings them to the

organisation and will put them to a rigorous round of counselling by which they will be able to

understand the problems which the victims went through or was facing and the basic needs and

requirements to keep them happy will be provided by the organisation without any compromise and

partiality. Odanadi has been following a particular culture where in the victims will be given the liberty to

choose a life outside the organisation if he/she wants to go back to the family or if they want to live an

independent life altogether. But the organisation will keep track and follow up with them even after they

are not a part of Odanadi.

Some of the important cases discussed with the counsellor

The names described below are an assumption even though the case happened in real life. The

organisation had a policy for not disclosing the names of the victims being described in the following

cases.

Case 1
An innocent middle aged woman named Raziya who was rescued by Railway Police Force and the

organisation came to know that she was a psychiatric patient after being brought to Odanadi. The major

problem which Raziya was facing is that, she is unable to remember her past even today. Raziya was not

able to recover any whereabouts of her family and her native. She is a part of Odanadi family since the

day she was brought into the organisation and is now doing no work or activities as she is a psychiatric

patient and the organisation is taking care of her completely.

Case 2
Pallavi, aged 9 years was brought to Odanadi on 10th December, 2003 after being rescued from a group of

5 boys who were sexually harassing her from in front KR Hospital. The organisation then did a through

medical check-up on her and the medical examinations revealed the fact that she was deaf and a mentally

retarded person. After 8 years of life at Odanadi she was able to read, write and even today she is an
active person in all aspects including Karate, Yoga, Dhyana etc. She is a responsible person now and does

all her work neatly. She is above 20 years old now and is doing fine at Odanadi.

Case 3
Rashmi, aged 19 years was brought to Odanadi on 21st February, 2009. She was a SSLC pass student and

her family problems caused her damages physically and mentally. The poor child had her parents both

mentally retarded and her mother passed away when she was young and her father then went for a second

marriage and which caused her problems by being neglected from the family all together. She was

suffering from bipolar effective disorder and her treatment is being monitored. Odanadi gave her the task

of handling the reception to keep her active, but the organisation then noticed her being exorbitantly

active and probing too much into the personal issues with all the visitors and hence she was taken off

from the receptionist post and the firm gave her the task of handling the bakery products production to

keep active all the time or else she will again be a victim of the old psychic problem. She is not cured and

even today she faces the problem and the organisation is making her involve in one or the other activities

to keep her equipped.

Case 4
Mahadevamma, having being educated only till 9th grade, was brought to Odanadi on 22nd May, 2005. She

was fallen pray for a sexual harassment (raped) from a resort in Madikeri, from where the local police

rescued her. She was completely disturbed out of the shock and her father then took her to Odanadi. The

government has handed over a cheque of Rs 90000 and now she is under the care of Odanadi.

Case 5
Maria, aged 47, joined Odanadi on 4th November, 2008. She is unmarried and also a mentally retarded

person, which is one reason why her family neglected her and she was left alone. Now she is under the

care of Odanadi.

Case 6
Vidya, joined Odanadi on 25th August, 2016. She has studied only till the class of 5th grade. She was

sexually harassed and trafficked, she was rescued from trafficking by the women welfare department and

Karnataka police at Belagavi and then brought to Odanadi. Noe she is under the umbrella of Odanadi.
Case 7
Anala, a small girl who was brought to Odanadi when she was just a 2 day old baby. She was given birth

by a woman who agreed on a surrogate pregnancy. The family then rejected the baby for the only reason

that she was a female. Anala was brought to Odanadi on 27th March, 2001. She is now aged around 16

years and she is very healthy and active with Odanadi now.

Field Activities

Admitted Meghna to K R Hospital

Meghna, a 10 year old girl, who lost the movements of her legs and the ability to speak due to a serious

accident from Ring road, Mysore. She witnessed her mother die in the accident and her uncle who was

riding the scooter also passed away the next day of the incident. Meghna was being looked after by her

sister (age 12) and her grandmother who was a maid.

The group helped them to admit Meghan to KR Hospital, as the family was not at all in a situation to bare

the ambulance or transportation charge.

Awareness creation and Fund raising for the event Yoga Stops Trafficking organized

by Odanadi here in Mysore on the 5th of March, 2017.

The group covered corporate offices in the Hebbal Industrial area of Mysore and created awareness

amongst the employees and made them understand the importance of yoga in controlling ones ill

thoughts. The companies and educational institutions which the group approached are,

Companies

Automotive Axles Ltd

Theorem
Larsen and Toubro
Skanray

Educational Institutions

Vidya Vardhaka College Of Engineering Mysore

National Institute of Engineering Mysore
JSS group of colleges
Sharadha group of colleges
Along with the corporates and the educational institutions, the group also visited the Ganapathi

Sacchidananda Ashram Mysore and created the awareness of the program which made them very happy

and they assured us that they will also be a part in the awareness spreading program.

Learning and Suggestions for improvement

The group was able to learn the happenings in the other face of the society which is usually the darker

side of the society for people who are economically backward. The importance of family support and

circle of friends which forms a protective shield in which we all are living against the harmful effects

from the society was better understood. It is also not only the fund raising and the awareness which is

important, but also a sense of humanity which every individual show possess to fight against such illegal

activities is most important in every citizens life.

As of now the work done and the effort taken by the organisation is really appreciable. But the

organisation should reach to all the nook and corner of the state and also outside Karnataka so that more

people will come to know about the service and also will be willing to be a part of the services provided

and by which Odanadi can get more benefits which can be directly transferred to the inmates and also the

social service the organisation provides. A word of mouth will be more powerful tool to reach the people

effectively.
The commonality which the group noticed in all the victims being brought to Odanadi is that, economic

backwardness, illiteracy and lack of security. This is mainly found in the slum region and other totally

economically backward regions. The people from the organisation should reach out to these localities and

educate them about the happenings in the society and how to edge the harmful effects of such practices to

the family. Along with these programs the organisation should also make the common man aware about

the government laws and support for the victims so that the common man will also understand how much

the government is involved in protecting people from harassment and other tortures.
Outlook for the future of the organization

Odanadi as a NGO is now doing a great activity and its reach has now extended to many countries such

as U.K, U.S.A, Netherlands, Italy and Sweden. Though they are facing threats from different groups, they

are brave enough to fight all troubles and drive the institution forward from the past 26 years. Now the

organisation has extensive support from the government and also from volunteers which will steer the

progress of Odanadi in the right track. With the technological advancements in the present world and

social media helping in spreading the awareness at an accelerated pace, the organisation has the potential

to become a role model for many such organisations in the future. Since every month we come across

many cases of violence and harassments in different forms, an organisation like Odanadi has a good

future to serve more and protect people from being a victim of such illegal activities. As a responsible

citizen, we have a bigger role to fight against exploitation and save the countrys integrity.

What Impact the SRP had on you and how it has influenced your world-

view

The socially relevant project assigned to us by the college has really helped me and my team to

understand the various problems being faced by so many people in our society which most people seems

to be not aware of. A common man in the present world seems to give the least of his time and

considerations for issues happening to other people in the surroundings. By SRP we were able to dive in

deep into the problems faced by young girls and other helpless women who have been victims of various
tortures (physically and mentally) and being looked after by an organisation called Odanadi. The

organisation showcased us to a lot of incidents and cases which happened over decades and made us all

understand the difficulties and helpless situations faced by girls. Some get ignored from the family, some

got raped, some others were tortured in the most brutal way and they were in that face of life were they

get the lost hope feeling and thats when Odanadi brings them to their family and takes care of them for

the rest their life. These incidents when narrated and after them showed us all those victims now from the

organisation, created a strong heartfelt sympathy towards them.

The major impact which the project gave me was that, I started to think more about them and then

understood the fact that how lucky we were and the happiness we had in our lives. The sufferings which I

had in my life so far is nowhere close to what these poor innocent children had gone through. This has

totally changed the way I now look at the society altogether. Social service by any means and

contribution from my side will be given to all the needy ones. The happiness and joy those children had

on their eyes when we interacted with them took me to tears and this has certainly been an instance which

shook me bad and completely changed the way I looked at the world on the other side.

Issues of societal problems and the empathy created in your group

concerning the issues.

Having been exposed to the problems happening around in the hidden side of the society, we have

understood the hardships faced by the people who are helpless. We started to think how much it effects

the family and the life of such people. The reason why most people dont spend time understanding and

caring for issues like this is that, it is as of now someone elses problem. Unless and until it becomes our

problem, we Indians dont act. This should be changed. Every person has the right to stop and eradicated

the probability of such incidents from happening in the future. And the group went through the complete

project walking in their shoes and thoroughly understood the complete picture and the problems being

faced. We felt sad and sorry for the inmates in the organisation, who never knew would have become
someone great and added value to the nations growth. Harassments, exploitation and abuse should be

stopped and proper awareness has to be spread across all people especially in the lower class and

backward groups and stop more such cases from happening in the future.

What Impact the SRP had on you and how it has influenced your world-view?

Odanadi addresses all forms of sexual violence against women and children, with a special focus on

human trafficking. It was a great opportunity for us (me and my team mates) to get the insight of the trust.

It gave us the idea about how the whole system works and how hard those people are working in order to

create awareness against human trafficking. The idea of creating awareness through Yoga is well

appreciated.

The SRP made an impact on me, Volunteering for Odanadi gave me a chance to witness how people are

struggling in this world. Statistic says that four out of five women are physically harassed every hour in

India. After completion of the SRP, I feel that it is my responsibility as a citizen of the country to create

awareness against human trafficking and child labour. Every individual should join the movement

Volunteer, donate and educate for odanadi.

We spent hours on social media and other platforms. It should be the responsibility for us to get united

and stop trafficking. This awareness can be created through any social media platform. As world needs

young individual to unite together to change the world.

According to me, human trafficking is one of the serious issue our world is currently facing. A country

like India where step against corruption and black money are initiated. Steps against human trafficking

should be taken in order to save women being harassed. . The trust needs support of compassionate and

committed people to create awareness against human trafficking.

Issues of societal problems and the empathy created in your group concerning the issues.

Odanadi believes no human is for sale, and this is what our team realised. Through the years odanadi has

been recognised and supported by organization and individual from all over the world. The world is not

aware of human trafficking, we got a chance to create awareness among various corporate sector and

educational institutes. Our team prepared presentation to make them aware what human trafficking is and

how important it is for everyone to volunteer to avoid exploitation against women.

Fund is one of the major issue that our country lacks. Most of the funds are provided from foreign NGOs

and other institutes. Identifying the victims is very important and taking actions against traffickers should

be imposed. All the victims should be protected without discrimination of gender, religion and region.

The group is moved, inspired and motivated with the experience we got from Odanadi and the harsh

ground realities and complications arising out of dealing with such issues.

Individual SRP report: K S Thejas [PGDM-16174]

What Impact the SRP had on you and how it has influenced your world-view?

Our SRP at Odanadi inspired me that our life is not so certain. It showed me the reality of the world

around me which not only have pleasant aroma, but also the bad odour in it. Being in the protective shell

of our parents, I sometimes complain that they have not fulfilled my wishes. But seeing the sufferers I ask

sorry to my parents who took care of me without letting me know the problems in the life. Yes, this is of

course is true to many of us. When I heard about the cases of the victims, I found that, many people have

misused their inabilities and has pushed them to the canyon of exploitation. Sufferers or the victims are in

and around us, who has been harassed because of their economic backwardness or illiteracy and so on.

But, as I said earlier, my perception about the society is changed. We are so lucky that we have certain

identity to live in the society. So, it is our responsibility to remove the weeds around us in the society and

help it. I am now clear in my mind to work directly or indirectly to weed out these illegal situations and

act as a responsible citizen to help my motherland. Awareness creation among the people and also trying

to help the victims will be my priority.

Issues of societal problems and the empathy created in your group concerning the
Issues?
Societal problems around us are enormous, these have made life of many people pathetic. Some of the

issues are created by us and some other are from unexpected events in the victims life. Begging, child

labour are the issues, which see and keep quiet thus an indirect support is being created. Miscreants have

effectively used this and today their network has been so huge, in a way that many are scape goats.

Irrespective of age, sex and religion people are exploited. Our group felt really sorry to this people and

we also tried work against the exploitation, we went to corporates and many educational institution to

create awareness. Our move initially has created a sense to fight against these irregularities in society.

But, we have to engage ourselves in a dedicated manner to get fruitful results. So we are also trying to

create the awareness among the people around us to make them know about these issues, using social

media it is possible for us to reach every part easily. Group has agreed to do this voluntarily without any

external force. Seeing the exploitation around and keeping mum, is not a good sign for a responsible

citizen. So, we should consider a society as a part of our family, though not literally, we must try to

protect them. Please dont alienate yourself, a help from you today might save millions in the future. So,

our group has decided to fight for this social cause, though not financially always, we will try to do our

little help to our society.

What Impact the SRP had on you and how it has influenced your world-view?

When I heard about the SRP project I was confused that in what way it will be helpful to the management

student and it is waste of time. But we were sent to the Odanadi seva samsthe, which has been working

for the rescue, rehabilitation, reintegration and empowerment of trafficked and sexually exploited women

and children. After going there my perception of world had changed and also learnt few managerial

lesson. I got to know that this is the society where nobody thinks about other ones because when we had

been, there was a case of 9 year old girl was sexually harassed by 5 boys around 10.30 pm near KR
hospital. It is near railway station which will always be crowded. I came to know that our problems are

nothing compared to other who are out in the society, this was when I reached Odanadi I saw them being

happy and living their life even though they had bigger problems. Most importantly got to know about

the women what kind of the problems they are facing in their life because of this society, and I learnt how

to treat a women. March 5th 2017, there was the event conducted named Yoga Stops Trafficking. For this

we had to collect fund and spread awareness, while in this process we got to know that many corporates

thinks and how they work for the CSR activities because of this we felt that serving the society is not as

easy as we think. Mainly, the thing is we have many option to live our life but there are many who are

having no option to live the life, I have learnt many things form my SRP project but one thing I will infer

is you have to be happy with what you have

Contributing something for the society:

After attending the SRP I realized that we students are totally cut off from the actual society affairs and

problems faced by the countries. We should give something back to the society in some way or the other

to the best of our ability. After SRP I got to know that respect women by not as god but respect them by

leaving them to leave their life.

Issues of societal problems and the empathy created in your group concerning the issues.

During our SRP we had seen a lot as to how the whole organization functions and how it has been

benefitting the Odanadi year after year. There are problems relating to funding because there is

increasing trafficking day by day even though the awareness is spread. We found that the rescued victims

have been uplifted by giving them trainings according to their needs and later if they want to be

independent, Odanadi allow them and keep their updates by being in contact. The number of people

volunteering to help and uplift the people are also comparatively less than the people actually needed.
