In case of any discrepancy of pressure value with a double-stage

shock absorber, its a bit complex to identify the root-cause.

LP chamber
It could come from

- An incorrect Nitrogen pressure in the Low-Pressure chamber, or

- An incorrect Nitrogen pressure in the High-Pressure chamber, or

- An incorrect Hydraulic volume in the Low-Pressure chamber

HP chamber

1.1. Record the ambient

temperature,

Valve A
LP chamber
1.2. Measure Pressure P(A) at Pressure P(A)
Valve A (Low-Pressure chamber),

1.3. Measure dimension H.

1.4. Refer to the measured pressure P(A) to find the correct dimension H from Diagram 1

Compare it with measured dimension H.

If the measured dimension H complies with the H from diagram 15 mm (0.59 in)
ACCEPTABLE

Measured
Pressure P(A)
1300 PSI

H
Ex : at 20oC
Pressure P(A) = 1300 PSI (89.6 Bar)
Dimension H = 6.0 Inches (152,5 mm)

1.5. Measure Pressure P(B) at Valve B (HP chamber)

P(B) > P(A) : Piston at the top

Valve A
LP chamber
Pressure P(A) P(B) = P(A) : Piston in intermediate
position
High Pressure P(B) is greater than Low Pressure P(A)
depending on the aircraft mass distribution on the MLGs.
P(B) < P(A) : Problem.

Valve B
HP chamber

Weight-Off-Wheels / shock absorber extended [P(A) < P(B)]
Weight-on-Wheels / shock absorber being compressed
Weight-on-Wheels / stable static position P(A) = P(B)
2.1. Add Nitrogen in HP chamber until P(B) = P(A) + 200 PSI
This results in having the floating piston being maintained pushed in the top
abutment position, like having a single stage shock absorber.

P(A) = 1,300

2.2. Slowly add (or remove) Nitrogen at valve A to set the
dimension H in accordance with Pressure P(A) on diagram 2.

20oC

Valve A :
Add (or remove) Nitrogen

Example :
- Temperature is : 20C
DIMENSION H = 6 in
- Current stroke is : 5.8 in
- Current pressure is : 1300 PSI
- Add Nitrogen at valve A up to 1400 PSI to match with a stroke H = 6 in

2.3. Adjustment of the High Pressure Chamber

Due to the over-inflation of pressure P(B) the overall

pressure in the shock absorber is higher than normal.
Remove Nitrogen from valve B to match the
pressure with the H as per diagram 1.
