EXPERIMENT NO-3
THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF INSULATING MATERIAL
NAME: _________________
ROLL No: ______

AIM: To determine the thermal conductivity of the given insulating material.

APPARATUS USED:

APPARATUS DESCRIPTION: It consists of 2 concentric spheres of 1.5mm

thickness, inner and outer spheres are 250mm and 300mm in diameter. The
space between the spheres is filled with insulating material. The inner sphere
is filled with oil, the oil is heated with the heater. The arrangement is such
that, heat transfer occurs from inner to outer sphere through insulating
material. Digital voltmeter and ammeter are used to measure the voltage
and current. Thermocouple is used to measure the temperature of the outer
sphere and oil sample.

THEORY:

PROCEDURE:
1. Switch on the mains and the heater.
2. Wait for sometime till the steady state is reached.
3. Note down the voltmeter, ammeter and thermometer reading.
4. Repeat the experiment for different inputs.
OBSERVATION:
1. Radius of the inner sphere, ri =
2. Radius of the outer sphere, ro =

CRITICAL HEAT FLUX
NAME: _________________
ROLL No: ______

AIM: To determine the critical heat flux for a given wire (Nichrome Wire)
APPARATUS USED:

APPARATUS DESCRIPTION: It consists of a container housing test hearer

and heater coil for initial heating of water. This heater coil is directly
connected to mains via dimmer start and an ammeter is connected in series
and a voltmeter across it. A micro controller based peak detector has been
provided to measure maximum current during the process. The test wire can
be viewed through a polycarbonate glass window. A glass container is kept
on the wooden stand which is fixed on a table.

PROCEDURE:
1. Heat is supplied to the Nichrome wire and it is slowly increased for the
following phenomena.
a) Pool boiling
b) Nuclear boiling
c) Film boiling
2. At the critical heat flux or burn out point, the wire melts. The
corresponding voltmeter and ammeter readings are noted.
3. Heat flux is calculated.
OBSERVATION:
1. Diameter of the wire d =

2. Length of the wire L =

3. Voltage at critical point V =

4. Current at critical point I =

5. Temperature at critical point T =

CALCULATIONS:
1. Area of the wire A = dL

2. Critical heat flow Q = V x I

3. Critical heat flux q= A
