In her report Yvonne mentions our 2016 big event the Alice, suggesting it is the biggest thing the Society
has ever done. Just to put the historic record straight: In 1996 the SWW Tasmania ran a four day Biennial
National Conference, with approximately sixty people from all over Australia attending. It was brought
about by a small committee of only four, of which I was one. Deirdre Gibson, Anne Layton-Bennett, Sue
Cartledge and Barbara Rose were also part of that Executive group (Barbara and Sue as President, at
different times).
Accommodation at Scotch Oakburn Primary was provided, meals had to be organised. There were many
many continuous varied workshops which took place over the period, a continuous bookshop table, t-shirts
and other memorabilia organised, a Biennial National Executive Committee meeting, a Conference Dinner,
Awards given for the then National Katherine Purnell Poetry Award as well as other (one of our own)
writing awards.
It was two years of organising. We need to not forget the hard work and dedication of previous Executive
Committees of our Society of Women Writers Tasmania . Back then we were part of a national body. The
Tasmanian executive committee (the same four members) spent two years as the State Executive, two years
as the National Vice Executive - when they planned and organised the Conference, then two years as the
Federal Executive. It was a lot of hard work. All members of this previous Executive were so exhausted
after more than six years of SWW committee work that they all resigned from the Organisation (including
myself). The resignation took place after attendance at a National Conference in which we, as outgoing
Federal Executive, advised the National body that SWW Australia was too cumbersome, that the way some
of the finances were organised was unethical, and that we thought major change needed to occur. Needless
to say, our comments given in the natiRQDO3UHVLGHQWV5HSRUWDQGWKH)LQDQFLDO5HSRUW at this national
biennial conference were not appreciated at the time. However, it was not long after this event that major
change occurred, of which the current State bodies are the beneficiaries.
It would be a good idea if our history was written down, as it is easy for current members to not understand
the huge amount of work that has gone before. I would be happy to undertake the part of the history that is
our first fifteen years, which began in 1985 or slightly earlier.
