Unit Topic: Life Cycle
Time Frame: 60 minutes
Text: Its Pumpkin Time by Zoe Hall
Other Materials: PowerPoint, computer lab

II. Essential Understanding/Questions :


How does an organism succeed in its envrionment?
What does it mean to be alive?
How do organisms change as they go through their life cycle?
What do all living things have in common?
Why are living things so different yet alike?
Students will understand all living things have a life cycle.
Living things change throughout their lifetime.
Students will understand that patterns exist in the universe.
All living things have characteristics in common.

III. Standards/Indicators
3.C.1.a ~ Idenitfy and show pictures of what an animal and a plant looks like at
each stage of its life cycle
RI1 ~ Ask and answer questions and key details in a text.
W2 ~ Students will write to inform about the pumpkin life cycle

IV. Lesson Objectives


Students will play four corners. In each corner, a different EQ will be placed.
Students will work in small groups to write/draw answers to the questions. They
will write to inform. Students will retell their poster to the class. After read aloud,
students will use a PowerPoint activity to demonstrate the life cycle of a pumpkin.

V. Evaluation/Assessment:
Assessment of Objectives
Students will use a PowerPoint to drag pictures to the correct location, in
the order of the pumpkin life cycle. When finished, they will learn how to print
their work, and turn in as a grade.

VI. Procedures:
Introduction
Four corners activity
Teaching/Activities
During reading, we will ask and answer question about the text.
Students will take a trip to the computer lab. They will given a PowerPoint
assignment, where they will drag pictures of the pumpkin life cycle into the
correct location.
Closure
Add to the essential questions.
Discuss how organisms change as they go through their life cycles. We
will talk about how all living things are different yet alike. Students will discuss
the basic needs/functions of living things.
