Student Company Secretary 2 December 2007

From The President

Communication is a skill that you can learn. It's like riding a

bicycle or typing. If you're willing to work at it, you can rapidly
improve the quality of very part of your life.
Brian Tracy

Dear Students,
Knowing how to communicate effectively has become a critical aspect of success in the
overall business world. Your ability to communicate effectively is one of the skills that you
require for your professional/ personal growth and success. No doubt your physical appearance
counts, but the real you is reflected by the words you speak from your mouth or by your day to day conversions. The
information age has resulted in an unprecedented number of daily exchanges through everything from voice mail and e-
mail to cell phones, videoconferencing and corporate intranets. While technology is more sophisticated than ever, people
using these advanced tools must themselves be skilled communicators or the message is lost. Research has also revealed
that the requirement to bolster the acquisition of communication skills is greater these days than it has ever been before.
Professionals performing multifarious functions have to spend considerable amount of their time in communicating at
various forums/levels. Your communication with others is for a purpose. It is to inform, to warn, to impress or to entertain.
You succeed when your purpose or intention is achieved. There is no greater secret weapon in business than to know how
to persuade people of your ideas. The time spent by professionals on communication and the attention it receives from
them speak about the importance of communication.
Effective communication depends not merely on mechanical skills such as correct grammar, but also on the ability to
communicate in styles appropriate to different audiences, and the ability to know what needs to be communicated, to
whom, and when. Writing and speaking are fundamental skills, and communication ability is identified by almost all employers
as a key element defining employee success.
Good writing will give you natural authority and improve the confidence with which you are able to approach other
aspects of business. Within a large company, it could lead to an improvement in your status. If you are an independent
professional, it will help you to make good contacts and institute yourself within the corporate network.
Equally important are your presentation skills because it defines your abilities to present information to others. Presentation
skills mean ability to communicate effectively whether it is a business proposal, information or ideas, to a group of people
or at a business function. You might be a good writer or speaker but how you present your ideas makes a lot of difference.
It is just like offering a cup of tea to a guest. If you offer a cup of tea to the guest simply for the sake of offering, perhaps he
may have it because you have offered. If the same cup of tea is offered with good presentation, he will not only feel tempted
to have it, but also enjoy the same.
Presentation is a critical skill which professionals as well as aspiring professionals must develop in view of the business
world which has enormously changed in recent decades with its technology and globalization, pushing us to work longer,
harder, smarter and faster. Therefore, strengthening communication skills is a must to be able to communicate flawlessly
and effectively.
Friends, I am conscious that you must be earnestly busy in preparing for the December 2007 examinations. So far as
preparing for the examinations is concerned, I will not dwell on this again as the same has been discussed by me elaborately
earlier. I am confident that you must have made thorough preparations to achieve the desired success. Wishing you good
luck for the examinations, my advice to all of you is: be positive, consistent and composed while writing the examinations.
I would like to reiterate that you should lay emphasis on improving your communication skills. How significant communication
skills are has been already emphasized above. You must communicate your answers effectively, giving proper explanations
and quote-relevant legal provisions wherever necessary.
I would also like to point out that Chartered Secretary is a prestigious journal of the Institute containing information, which

is extremely useful both for professionals as well as the students. You should consider subscribing Chartered Secretary,
which is made available to students at a concessional rate of Rs. 300 for twelve issues. Developing habit of regularly
reading Chartered Secretary would provide you useful information that would enhance your knowledge as well as keep you
abreast of latest developments that would also help you while preparing for the examination.
Friends, I am pleased to inform you that the ICSI National Awards for Excellence in Corporate Governance for 2007 were
presented at a fascinating function on November 26, 2007 at Kolkata to Tata Consultancy Services Limited and Kansai
Nerolac Paints Limited. The awards were presented at the gracious hands of Shri Prem Chand Gupta, Honble Union
Minister of Corporate Affairs in the presence of Honble Justice Shri V. N. Khare, Chairman, Jury and Former Chief Justice
of India, who was the Guest of Honour. ICSI Life Time Achievement Award for Translating Excellence in Corporate Governance
into Reality was conferred upon Shri N Vaghul, Chairman & CEO, ICICI Bank.
Shri S H Rajadhyaksha, Company Secretary, Tata Consultancy Services Limited and Shri G T Govindarajan, Company
Secretary, Kansai Nerolac Paints Limited were also awarded in recognition of their commitment to ensure good corporate
governance. The Sixth Revised Edition of the prestigious research work of the Institute Corporate Governance: Modules of
Best Practices was also released at the hands of the Minister at the Award Function. The Minister also inaugurated the 24
hour helpline for students.
The Award function was preceded by a Panel Discussion on Are Corporate Sustainability and Social Sustainability
Interdependent? Shri Y C Deveshwar, Chairman, ITC Limited was the Moderator and S/Shri Rajnikant Patel, MD & CEO,
Bombay Stock Exchange, Dr. Y R K Reddy, Founder Academy of Corporate Governance and Yaga Consulting; Harshvardhan
Neotia, Chairman, Ambuja Reality Development Ltd. and S Mahalingam, Executive Director & CFO, Tata Consultancy
Services Ltd. were the Panelists. The Award function was attended by Members of Jury, captains of industry, large number
of distinguished professionals, members and students of the Institute were also present.
As you are aware, the students after passing all the CS examinations are required to undergo inter alia 15 days training
with different authorities. It was felt necessary that the training that the students undergo with various authorities could also
be extended and diversified in the interest of specialisation that is a call of the competitive world. We have therefore,
approached different authorities like IRDA, Debt Recovery Tribunal, Commodity Exchanges, Stock Brokers, Competition
Commission, Excise, Customs and Service Tax authorities, etc., and are receiving positive responses from such authorities.
This step will enrich our students to take on the future challenges.
Further, the Institute has planned to provide Placement services in a big way. Campus Interviews are being organized at
the conclusion of SMTPs. Such programmes have been organized at different places including Delhi and Bombay and the
response was very good. The placements made were attractive both to the companies and company secretaries.
On this note, I would like to conclude by reiterating that for professionals importance of good communication skills both
oral and written cannot be ignored, as communication is the immediate touchstone for assessing an individuals abilities at
the threshold. It is an essential component of organizational success whether it is at the interpersonal, intergroup, intragroup,
organizational, or external levels. Effective communication skills are not easily obtained. They require practice and feedback
from another person to be sure that communication is occurring. However, as you develop better skills in communicating,
they can help you learn more about yourself from others and can greatly enrich the quality of your relationships.

With best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

New Delhi (PREETI MALHOTRA)
