Homework 4. Evaluating Properties.

3.74. Determine the compressibility factor for water vapor at 100 bars and 400C, using
(a) data from the compressibility chart.
(b) data from the steam tables.

3.79. Butane (C4H10) undergoes a process in a piston-cylinder assembly from p1 = 5 MPa, T1 = 500
K, p2 = 3 MPa during which the relationship between pressure and volume is pv1.05 = constant. The
mass of butane is 5 kg. Determine the final temperature, in K, and the work, in kJ.

3.88. A tank contains 10 lb of air at 560R with a pressure of 50 lbf/in 2. Determine the volume of
the air, in ft3. Verify that ideal gas behavior can be assumed for air under these conditions.

3.93. Assuming the ideal gas model, calculate the changes of specific internal energy and enthalpy,
in kJ/kg, of methane (CH4) gas from T1 = 320 K to T2 = 800 K.

3.96. Consider a gas mixture whose apparent molecular weight is 33, initially at 3 bars and 300 K,
and occupying a volume of 0.1 m3. The gas undergoes an expansion to 0.2 m3 during which the
pressure-volume relation is pV1.3 = constant. Assume the ideal gas model with cv= 0.6 + (2.5 10-
4
)T, where T is in K and cv is in kJ/kgK. Neglecting kinetic and potential energy effect, determine
(a) the mass of gas, in kg.
(b) the final pressure, in bars.
(c) the final temperature, in K.
(d) the work and heat transfer, each in kJ.

3.98. One kilogram of air, initially at 5 bars,

350 K, and 3 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2),
initially at 2 bars, 450 K, are confined to
opposite sides of a rigid, well-insulated
container, as illustrated in Fig. P3.98. The
partition is free to move and allows the
conduction from one gas to the other without
energy storage in the partition itself. The air
and carbon dioxide each behave as ideal
gases. Determine the final equilibrium
temperature, in K, and the final pressure, in
bars, assuming constant specific heats.

3.101. Two kilograms of a gas with molecular weight 28 are contained in a closed, rigid tank fitted
with an electric resistor. The resistor draws a constant current of 10 amp at a voltage of 12 V for 10
min. Measurements indicate that when the equilibrium is reached, the temperature of the gas
increase by 40.3C. heat transfer to the surroundings is estimated to occur at a constant rate of 20
W. Assuming ideal gas behavior, determine an average value of the specific heat cp, in kJ/kgK, of
the gas in this temperature interval based on the measured data.

3.103. A gas confined to one side of a rigid, insulated container divided into equal volumes by a
partition. The other side is initially evacuated. The following data are known for the initial state gas:
p1 = 3 bars, T1 = 380 K, and V1 = 0.025 m3. The partition is removed, and the gas expands to fill the
entire container. Assuming the ideal gas behavior, determine the final equilibrium pressure, in bars.

3.107. A system consists of 2 kg of carbon dioxide gas initially at state 1, where p1 = 1 bar, T1 = 300
K. The system undergoes a power cycle consisting of the following processes:

Process 1-2: constant volume to p2 = 4 bars.

Process 2-3: expansion with pv1.28 = constant.
Process 3-1: constant-pressure compression.
Assuming the ideal gas model and neglecting kinetic and potential energy effects,
(a) sketch the cycle on a p-v diagram.
(b) calculate the thermal efficiency of the cycle.
