Explain how you would exploit the song to incorporate the concepts of visual arts in ESL
classroom.

Visual art are those creations we can look at, such as a drawing or a painting (Shelley Esaak,
2016). Here are the examples of visual arts; drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture,
photography and so on. In order to have a better result of acquiring knowledge, teacher can use
song together with the concepts of visual arts in ESL classroom. Therefore, song plays its
crucial role in teaching and learning classroom.

First and foremost, teachers can use song when teaching about feeling and emotions. Song and
visual arts are related in clarifying thoughts, feelings and emotions. For example, a teacher may
play a song about happiness and let the students determine the colour of happiness. Some may
use red colour to represent happiness. The activities continues with different songs with different
feelings described in each song. As an example, look into the watercolour works of Charles
Burchfield. His interpretations of sky and cloud forms are based on his love and knowledge of
music.

Besides, teachers can encourage speaking, listening and vocabulary development skills through
song and visual arts. For instance, we can start the year off by introducing elements of lines,
colour, and shape. Connecting spoken words such as zigzag, sculpture, portrait with a visual
model helps students grasp new vocabulary. Students later on can share their work and practice
their presentation skills. Thus, students can use song in presenting their work.

Moreover, teacher can use song in teaching grammar. For example, a teacher may provide
them a few songs and ask them to look for the grammar mistakes. Then, they need to present it
through singing and dancing with the correct grammar.

Next, song can be used in visual arts through painting and drawing. For instance, teacher can
play a song with list of stuffs within the lyrics. Then, the students need to find out what are those
stuffs and draw them on a piece of paper.

Apart from that, teachers can ask the students to bring in a photograph they have taken and ask
the other students to write a short song about the events leading up to the moment the
photograph was taken (practising past tenses) and/or what happened after the photograph was
taken. Then check whether their guess was right with the owner.
Other than that, get the students to record vocabulary by writing the letters in a way that
depicts the meaning of a word this works best with adjectives. For example, happy can be
written in the form of a smile. Then, they need to find a song regarding that adjectives.

Lastly, teachers can use song in teaching nouns. As an example, a teacher may show to the
students the pictures of fruits and later they need to perform about the nouns through songs.
