OSTP Standard 4 & CEC Standard 5

Instruction

The OSTP Standard 4 is teachers plan and deliver effective instruction that advances the
learning of each individual student and the CEC Standard 5 is beginning special education
professionals select, adapt, and use a repertoire of evidence-based instructional strategies to
advance learning of individuals with exceptionalities. These standards are important because
they lay out that teachers are to have high expectations for all students and they implement
strategies designed to enable all students to achieve. It is important for teachers to use research-
based instructional strategies that provide challenging and positive learning experiences for all
students. These standards ensure that teachers explore, evaluate and integrate learning tools,
including technology, to make content comprehensible to students. Instruction skills are
important for teachers to ensure that they advance students learning and help them grow. These
standards are also important because in order to be an effective, teachers need to adapt their
instructional strategies with the abilities of their students and to accommodate to all learning
needs. Along with academic instruction, it is important for teachers to instruct students on proper
behavior. This instruction helps students to develop as independent learners as well as complex
problem-solvers. It is also important for teachers to be familiar with varying teaching styles,
ways to communicate and a variety of assistive technologies to support all students including
those with exceptionalities.

An artifact that relates to these standards is a behavior intervention plan that I created for a
student in the classroom I completed my fieldwork in the fall of my junior year. The assignment
was to complete a functional behavior analysis on a student and then create a behavior
intervention plan that was appropriate for the student to reach his/her target behavior. This
artifact is an instructional plan for teaching a student proper alternative behavior in order to
eventually reach the desired behavior. This behavior intervention plan includes detailed
description on how to instruct the child to eventually reach the desired behavior and also
provides rational. It also lays out an instructional plan for data collection in order to make
informative decisions on how to further instruction for the student.

This artifact relates to the OSTP and CEC standards on instruction because it shows that I
understand how to plan and deliver effect instruction that is backed by data and is research based.
This artifact displays how I understand the importance of continuing effective instruction in not
only academic disciplines but in behavior as well in order to advance the learning of each
individual student and ensure that each child possesses the necessary skills to succeed. This
artifact implements a variety of instructional strategies to reach the final goal of learning for the
student and provides room for adapting and problem solving. I believe this artifact shows my
competency as a future teacher because it shows that I can teach to mastery and promote the
generalization of learning as well as develop communication skills in my students. This type of
instructional planning prepares the teacher for adjustments and takes into consideration an
individuals abilities, interests and learning environments.
