TITLE :
Resistance

OBJECTIVE :
Measuring the effectiveness for parallel and series resistors.

APPARATUS :
i.! Voltmeter
ii.! Ammeter
iii.! Voltage supply
iv.! Resistance !" , !# , !$

THEORY :
The arrangement of resistors is important because it will influence the effectiveness
resistance in the circuit. There are two ways of circuit arrangements: in series and
parallel.

a.! Series Circuit

Effective Resistance, !% = !" + !# + !$

b.! Parallel Circuit

A resistor is a two-terminal electrical electronic component that resists an electric
current by producing a voltage drop between its terminals in accordance with Ohms
(
law: .
)

[ = resistance of a resistors, * = potential difference or voltage across the resistors, +

= electrical current flowing through the resistor]

1.! Series Circuit

a.! Assemble the circuit as shown in Figure 1.

b.! Using voltmeter, measure the voltage each resistance.
c.! Using ammeter, measure the current each resistance.
d.! Complete the table.
2.! Parallel Circuit

R
!" !# !$

a.! Assemble the circuit as shown in Figure 1.

b.! Using voltmeter, measure the voltage each resistance.
c.! Using ammeter, measure the current each resistance.
d.! Complete the table.

DATA :

1.! Resistance in series :

!" !# !$
VOLTAGE (V)
CURRENT (A)

2.! Resistance in Parallel :

!" !# !$
VOLTAGE (V)
CURRENT (A)
CALCULATION :

1.! Calculate the effective resistance (!, ) for each circuit using formula.
a)! Resistance in series

b)! Resistance in series

DISCUSSIONS :

CONCLUSION :
QUESTIONS :

1.! State your observation in both circuits in voltage (V) and current (I).

2.! Compare !% obtained from formula and answer from experiment.

3.! Door resistors obeys the Ohms Law. Give your reasons.
