    He was definitely not jealous.

    Karim Shah repeated the words in his head even as the knot twisted tighter deep in his gut. He gripped the phone tighter and took a deep breath, body relaxing on exhale. On the other end of the line, Rajesh Gupta, went on and on about reuniting with his son after fifteen years.

    I’ve finally got a second chance at life, Rajesh was saying, I’ve got the woman I love back and my son. I’ve got so much to look forward to.

    Yes, everything seemed to have fallen in place for his best friend, thought Karim a little sourly.

    But he wasn’t jealous.

    Nor did his best friend’s newfound happiness have anything to do with his standing at a New York intersection playing stalker to a bakery on a warm summer evening. From the outside it looked like any other business in Queens. The Spice of Life, read the sign over the awning. Catchy. He could see customers that filled the window tables. It looked like business was good.

    When the raven-haired beauty appeared in the window, Karim’s breath caught. It didn’t matter that he’d been looking for her, that he’d expected to see her. The mere sight of her was always like a punch in the gut. Her hair was pulled back from her oval face into a ponytail that hung down in her back. The style highlighted her chocolate brown eyes, framed by thick lashes. She looked exactly the way she did the first time he saw her almost eighteen years ago.
