Yossos text has both shaped and informed me of the corrupt ways and discrimination

going on in the world of the education system. For me, it brought into the light, how

different people of color are being viewed as dumb only for not being school smart,

rather than being appreciated for being there in class, willing to get an education, and

bringing in such beautiful culture that the US thrives on. Its also sad, that after so many

years of dealing with racial problems educators can find it in them to still discriminate

against people of color, rather than to move on from those negative thoughts that do no

good for them and create a safe learning environment with equity.

I consider myself somewhat of a reader because I do read news articles or about

people that interest me online sometimes, but at the same time I dont really pick up a

book and start reading for fun normally, the way I used to in elementary or middle

school.

1. Reason: Having difficulty connecting with ideas of the author

2. How did it challenge you? The way Yosso wrote the text made it difficult for me

to be able to make connections as to what she was talking about.

3. Reason:Lacking cultural literacy, not understanding certain references.

4. How did it challenge you? I had a difficult time reading about all these other

writers, not knowing who they were and what they had to do with her article.

5. Reason: Having limited vocabulary and not understanding some of the

complex scholarly words.

6. How did it challenge you? Some I was able to use context clues, but most I

didnt completely understand even with having used those clues. I couldnt

completely understand what the word meant.

4) Strategy:Annotating

1. How it helped you make meaning of the text: I am able to look back at my

initial thoughts going on from a passage, or look at the highlighted main part.

3. How it helped you make meaning of the text: I pay attention to what I am

actually reading and it helps with me not getting distracted by what's around

me.

5. How it helped you make meaning of the text: It helps me realize what

something means as well as why someone is used in a text.

5) To be a college-level reader means that you can read and understand

complex text, and if you cant understand something you will research the term or

sources cited.
