1)Introduction:
Papercrete is a tricky term. The name seems to imply a mix of paper and
concrete. papercrete consists of 50-80% waste paper of any kind, reasonable
amount of water and portland cement. Traditional concrete is made of sand and
gravel held together with cement.
As sand and gravel cant be held together on its own,it requires a lot of cement to
hol
d ittogether. Paper on the other hand ,is fibrous in nature and holds together on its
own. Therefore ,it requires less cement.. Cardboard, glossy magazine stock,
advertising brochures, junk mail or just about any other type of "mixed (lower)
grade" paper is acceptable. Sometypes of paper work better than others, but all
types work.Newsprint is best. Waterproofed paper and cardboard, such as butcher
paper, beer cartons, etc. are harder to break down inwater. Catalogs, magazines
and other publications are fine in and of themselves, but somehave a stringy,
rubbery, sticky spine, which is also water resistant. Breaking down this kindof
material in the mixing process can't be done very well.
2) Bond between cement and paper
:
Paper is principally wood cellulose, which is considered a fibrous material.
Celluloseis the second most abundant material on earth after rock. It is the main
component of plantcell walls, and the basic building block for many textiles and for
paper. Cellulose is a natural polymer, a long chain of linked sugar molecules made
by the linking of smaller molecules
CELLULOSE HYDROGEN BONDS.
Figure 1: structure of cellulose
The links in the cellulose chain are a type of sugar: -D-glucose. The cellulose chain
bristleswith polar -OH groups. These groups form many hydrogen bonds with OH
groups onadjacent chains, bundling the chains together. The chains also pack
regularly in places toform hard, stable crystalline regions that give the bundled
chains even more stability andstrength. This hydrogen bonding forms the basis of
papercrete's strength
