My music video offers many of the similar codes and conventions used in the

R&B genre though the Mis-en-scene, camera, sound and editing. These will be
explored in this question.
Firstly, the four images above show some of the many codes and conventions
used very frequently in this genre. The images above are from the music video I
created. These shots can also be denoted in my many different other videos in
order to express the stereotypes and codes and conventions in this genre

The image on the left denotes a close up shot of the artist

performing is song Just a dream. Many R&B songs are written
to connect emotionally to the targeted demographic linking to
the uses and gratifications theory as the audience can identify
and relate to the passion the artists are showing
Both these images denote two close ups of the main
actors in the videos. Close ups are a recurring code and
convention used in music videos to introduce the
characters. Main characters are almost always placed in
the middle of the shot to connote their importance

In R&B two shots and close ups are used regularly in

order to denote special and meaningful objects to the
demographic, in this case the guitar on left and the Piano
on the right which features in Jason Derulos videos
symbolise the deeper meanings behind the videos.

The four key microelements are very important factors to consider when
devolving a music video. After intensive research and planning the mis en scene,
sound, camera and editing where all considered when developing the music,
each of these components are both synergic and different to the components
used in my music video.
Mis en scene
The mis en scene in my music video is very similar to other music videos
produced in this genre. Firstly, desaturated lighting is a common convention used
within this genre in order to connote the dark themes usually discussed within
this genre. Artists in the R&B genre often base their music and their videos om
negative issues they are facing hence the dark desaturated lighting used within
my video. Akon a famous R&B artist used the same technique in his Sorry,
blame it on me in order to apologises for a mistake he made a few years ago

The narratives of the two videos also follow a synergistic narrative structure.
Akons music video along with mine switches between the narrative and
performance shots in order to tell the story from both peoples perspectives. For
Akon, he was denoting an issue he once experienced though two different
perceptions, similarly in my video I attempted to raise an issue close to my heart
through the mis-en-scene
However, I also subverted many of the conventions of R&B music videos, mainly
through my use of low key lighting. Although some artists such as Akon do use
desaturated low key lighting to discuss issues, many of the songs produced in
this genre are in fact happier and do look at more positive issues The high key
lighting is used to connote peace and happiness to the audience. In Rihannas
case, a long shot denoting her in the bath implies her washing her past away and
making a fresh start. the audience can signify from this that she is now pure and
innocent and can put the previous issues behind her and move on. Rhianna is
being represented as the damsel in distress according to props theory.

As denoted by the image on the left

taken from Rihannas song love on
the brain the lighting is very high key
and saturated. Rihanna is in fact
talking about a negative issue in her
video however still decided to use
bright lights to identity with a
negotiated audience.

CAMERA
The various camera shots used in my videos are synergistic to camera shots
used in other videos as discussed at the start of the question. However, in many
music videos, the different camera shots juxtapose the shots used in my video

As denoted by the images above through Jason Derulos song Marry me, some
music videos within the R&B genre consist mainly of medium to long shots rather
than a frequent number of close up shots. The medium shots used in the video
signify an interaction with the audience making them feel involved however the
exclusion of close ups has been specifically used to create distance between the
demographic and the artist, Although the video contains large voyeuristic
pleasure for the audience, Jason Derulo is creating internal focalisation through
his long shots as he feels what he has with his special female is something no
one can ever have.
One Important reason I chose to subvert this particular camera shot and
convention is due to the different narrative ideologies. The fact that my music
video connotes much lower modality than Jason Derulos suggests close ups up
are essential to express the true emotion behind the song and to ensure the
video signifies true diegetic reality.

Editing
Editing techniques in music video are essential in conforming the codes
and conventions of music videos. My music videos conform many of the
conventions of the genre. However, it also subverts many. The first video
in which is synergistic to my music video is Marios let me love you
although the narratives are very different and signify different
connotations the editing structure is very similar. The use of jump cuts is a
common convention used within the genre. A frequent use of jump cut
keeps the target demographic engaged throughout the video. The
constant changing of scenes creates enigmas for the audience to decode.
Many. Continuity editing techniques are also commonly used throughout
R&B music videos. This frequently used technique conforms the
conventions through telling the story in a chronological order; this makes
the video much more engaging for the audience and more easily

understood. A good example of this can be found in Beyoncs song

lemonade

Jump cuts in Beyoncs latest music video are used to denote a

progression in time in a intense way that juxtaposes the sound
track.
