Guided Questions : Technological Products (TP)

Three aspects from the video that resonated with me are

-Purpose of product can dictate the type of material used and how
that material is transformed/processed/manipulated to create the
product.

-Chemical compositions of textiles. New developments of smart

materials and the unusual purposes that they are being used for.

-Tech products are defined as material.

o How does this component differ from

Characteristics of Technological Outcomes?
The Technological Outcomes component relates to the end product
or system that has been developed for a specific purpose and that
connects with natural objects, people and social, political or cultural
systems. The Technological Products component relates to
technological outcomes that are products, specifically the materials
they are made of.
The Tech Product component is about identifying, describing, using
and developing materials and looking at how the choice of those
materials can affect the fitness for purpose of technological
products.

o What are performance properties and how are

they measured?
Performance properties are characteristics of the technological
products such as thermal conductivity or water resistance. They are
determined by the material properties which are determined by the
chemical composition and structure (arrangement of particles).

o What is the difference between subjective

measurement and objective measurement? (Provide
examples of each).
Subjective measurement relates to properties of materials that
people experience in different ways such as colour, taste, comfort.
Objective measurement relates to properties such as UV or tear
resistance which can be measured in relation to a standard.

o Materials can be formed, manipulated and/or

transformed to enhance the fitness for purpose.
Explain what each term means and give an example.
Formed: Forming is when two or more materials are brought
together to form a material with new chemical composition
and structure e.g dough
Manipulated: Manipulating is incorporating a material into a
product in a way that enables it to contribute in the best way
to the products performance. There is no change to the
materials chemical composition and therefore structure e.g
gluing.

Transformed: Transforming involves changing the physical

structure of a product without changing its chemical
composition e.g heating metal to strengthen it.

o Why is material selection and material evaluation

important in the development of a technological
outcome?
Different materials have different chemical structures and therefore
will result in different performance and fitness for purpose in a
product. Materials chosen should be ones that will result in the
development of a product that functions optimally.
