Written Report: Ang Usapin ng Wika at Panitikang Filipino at ang Paglahok ng Pilipinas sa
Globalisasyon ni Bienvenido Lumbera

Bienvenido states that nationalism and globalization can be obtained by a borderless world. A borderless
world is said to be a myth, a mere fantasy that cannot be achieved in todays era. The newest buzzword in
the popular business press is globalization, a word that evokes images of a world in which goods,
services, capital, and information flow across seamless national borders. In this world, the choices over
where to produce, shop, invest, and save are no longer confined within national borders but have taken on
a decidedly global orientation. Some analysts speculate that globalization has blurred the economic
distinctions between countries, creating a borderless world in which economic decisions are made
without reference to national boundaries.

The view that national borders have become economically meaningless is controversial. But, if correct, it
has potentially important implications for the worlds economies and their policymakers. One current
concern is that, by enhancing access to the labor resources and products of low-wage countries,
globalization could already be stunting workers living standards in relatively high-wage countries. A
truly borderless world would place great limits on the ability both to confine the effects of domestic
economic policy within national borders and to insulate countries from foreign economic shocks. In such
a world, financial capital, production activities, and even workers could move in response to better
opportunities elsewhere in the world almost as easily as they could within a given country, thereby
undermining efforts to maintain economic or financial conditions at home that diverge substantially from
those abroad.

Bienvenido highlights the importances of achieving a borderless world. Among these are democracy,
human rights and a clean environment. He also states that education is important to prepare the youth to
be future citizens of the world. The Filipinos are being exploited by global capitalism at the stage of
colonial subjection without us knowing, and this is why he advocates for a borderless world despite it
being unrealistic.

Bievenido also talks about fighting for language and literature at globalization. In regards to the seminar,
it referred to the need to involve the social issues of the intellectual and extremely narrow locking their
specialization. This is supposed to encourage them to use their voices to the debate and discourse on the
problems of contemporary society.
Globalization should not result in the new slavery of people. Proponents of globalization argue that it
allows poor countries and their citizens to develop economically and raise their standards of living, while
opponents of globalization claim that the creation of an unfettered international free market has benefited
multinational corporations in the Western world at the expense of local enterprises, local cultures, and
common people. Resistance to globalization has therefore taken shape both at a popular and at a
governmental level as people and governments try to manage the flow of capital, labor, goods, and ideas
that constitute the current wave of globalization.

As said by Bienvenido, relating to the use of the language proposes actions and decisions. Those with
implications for society and people act in the process of globalization. Not only the leaders must decide
on initiatives and proposals but clearly prescribe the participation of citizens in decisions related to the
process of globalization. Be smooth and tranquil in entering changes in economic society if approved by
the basic sectors. It will be a full and effective participation of a country convinced by the people that
would benefit them if the changes are required by participation in globalization. And convince the people
only if they are referred by their leaders, and the language of the consultation is Filipino.

It should be taken to note that English is the language used in traditionally discussing and deciding elite
leadership, and often presume the authority to the agreed level information and they are assigned only to
bring the people to carry. Essentially, the role of Filipino and any other indigenous language in this
situation is valuable because it is the only medium of full dialogue between the people and their leaders.
Complex issues coiled in the process of globalization, and that is explicable only maipatatanggap and
citizens through the language of their day-to-day life.
