Causal Analysis
seeks to identify and understand the
reasons why things are as they are
and hence enabling focus of change
activity
basic principle of causal analysis is to
find causes that you can treat rather
than treating symptoms
a method of paragraph or essay
development in which a writer
analyzes the reasons and / or
consequences of an action, event, or
decision
Cause - reasons why something
happened; source of something
Cause asks: (1) why did it
happen?; (2) why does it
happen?; (3) why will it
happen?
Effects - results or outcomes
Effect asks: (1) what did it
produce?; (2) what does it
produce?; (3) what will it
produce?
two ways to organize causal analysis:
1. Chronology - a method of organization
based on the time-frame or
chronological order of the causes or
effects of specific events
2. Empathy - a method of organization
based on what is the most important
supporting event/fact up to the least
important
Process Analysis
process analysis is a method of
paragraph or essay development by
which a writer explains step by step
how something is done or how to do
something
process analysis writing can take one
of two forms: (1) it can provide
information about how something
works (informative) or (2) it can explain
how to do something (directive)
informative process analysis is
usually written in the third-
person point of view

Facebook Swallowed Journalism
main points:
Publishers are losing control over
their relationships with readers
News media organizations, already
weakened by the loss of audience
and revenues, recognize that a
growing percentage of their traffic
was coming from digital platforms
Three motivations of these social
platforms (e.g. Facebook - Instant
Articles)
1. Avoid having users abandon a
link to news content because of
a slow download
2. Keep users in their own walled
gardens to prevent them from
going to other platforms
3. Take advantage of the
audiences attention to send
them targeted advertisements,
tailored to personal tastes,
preferences, and buying habits
