!
1) Answer the following with short, one or few sentence answers.
a) What is second harmonic generation?
b) What are the Einstein coefficients?
c) What criterion determines whether a system is in the Fraunhofer or
Fresnel diffraction regime
d) What is diffraction?
e) What is meant by fringes of equal thickness?
f) What is Brewster's angle?
g) What is dichroism?
h) When traveling through glass, which travels faster: red light or blue
light?
i) What do the Fresnel equations describe?
j) What does superposition mean?

r r
2) Using Maxwell's equations for free space, show that the E and B fields satisfy wave
equations.

!
3) Assuming only the primary reflections matter, derive ! equations for the locations of
the
maxima and minima for thin-film interference. Describe any additional assumptions or
effects that are important in terms of the material properties, geometry etc.

4) Derive Snells Law.

5) An electromagnetic wave is specified by E = ("4 i + 3 j )(10 3 V /m)e i[(3x +4 y )# $10 .
Determine
a) the direction of propagation
b) the frequency
c) the wavelength !
d) the amplitude
e) type of polarization

f) the associated B field
g) the irradiance and
h) the average radiation pressure exerted on a 1 cm2 surface.

6) A blade of grass standing 10.0 mm tall is 150 mm in front of a thin positive lens
having a 100 mm focal length. A distance of 250 mm from the first lens is a second thin
lens with focal length -75.0 mm. Determine
a) the location of the image formed by the first lens
b) the type of image formed (full quantitative description)
c) the location of the final image after the second lens and
d) a full description of the final image.
e) If the second lens is moved so that no separation exists between the
two lenses, determine the final image location and fully describe the
the final image.

7) Imagine you are in a medium with index of refraction n1 and a distance l1 above a
second medium. The second medium has index of refraction n2 and is l2 thick. The
second medium lies on top of a third medium with index of refraction n3 and is l3 thick.
For an object located at the bottom of the third medium, derive an expression for the
apparent distance away from you that the object would appear to be. If l1=0.50 m,
n1=1.333, l2=0.2 m, n2=2.417, l3=2.0 m, and n3=1.5 m, determine the apparent distance
to the object.

8) Determine the result of the superposition of the following waves

E1 = 7cos(" /3 # $t), E 2 = 12sin(" /4 # $t), E 3 = 20cos(" /5 # $t) . Write your answer
in terms of a cosine function.

! 9) Laser light passes through two identical and parallel slits 0.2 mm apart. Interference
fringes are seen on a screen 1 m away. Interference maxima are separated by 3.3 mm.
What is the wavelength of the light? How does the irradiance at the screen vary if the
contribution of one slit alone is Io?

10) Describe the fundamental physics principles at work in a laser system. Describe the
principle components of a laser system and how they effect the production of a laser
beam. List at least three applications of laser technology. What determines the
wavelength of laser light produced?
