Last year I decided to do something totally different and exciting for my holiday. I
love horse riding and Im a big fan of cowboy films. So Clare (my husbands sister)
and I went to Texas and stayed on a real ranch with real cowboys. Everyday we
helped round up the cattle and move them to fresh fields. As I work at a riding school,
I didnt mind being on horseback seven hours a day. But Clare only goes riding at
weekends and was really exhausted by the end of the day. We had a brilliant time,
though!

A Magic Job
Ken Flannagan began his career in the magic industry only two years ago, but he has already
managed to make a name for himself. When he first started out as a trainee magician at the age
of fifteen, his parents werent very thrilled about it. They thought that he wouldnt be able to
earn a decent living and they tried to convince him otherwise.
Luckily, Kens mentor (the well-known magician Malcolm Potts) taught him well. Malcolm
insisted that he practise day and night. Perfecting his own tricks and inventing new ones was the
key to Kens success. Soon, he was participating in some of his mentors shows and then
worked on his own.
He is now a performer at childrens parties and other events throughout the city. Most recently,
just last October, he won first prize at the Annual Junior Magicians Convention in Minneapolis.
Since then, he has been earning $400 per performance, which you have to admit isnt too bad
for someone who hasnt even graduated from school yet!
What does this teach us? Sometimes you just have to take a chance! Ken often says, If youre
determined you can be successful, so dont let anyone tell you what you can and cant do.
Were not surprised!

High Flier
Alistair Eve is a man with an unusual job, to say the least! He is a human cannonball. Twice a day he
is fired from a cannon, normally used in battles, and is thrown through the air at nearly 80 kilometres
per hour. Hes a real crowd-pleaser, but its not as easy as it looks. Alistair admits that its a tough job
that requires a lot of concentration and perfect timing.
Alistair comes from a long line of circus performers and grew up under the Big Top. His father was a
clown, bringing tears of laughter to generations of children and his mother was a daring trapeze artist.
Naturally, Alistair wanted to keep up the tradition and follow in his familys footsteps. Like his mum,
he has always had a passion for danger and decided that human cannonball was the career for him.
To do his act, Alistair climbs into the cannon and carefully positions himself. Then air is pumped
inside the barrel at high pressure. As he flies into mid-air he has to keep his body as tight as possible
and land on his back in the safety net. Its all over in a matter of seconds, but getting it right takes
years of training and a high level of skill.
In over a decade of performing Alistair has never had a serious accident. Just a few bumps and
bruises, he says, laughing. Still, after seeing how fast and high he goes, I intend to keep my feet
firmly on the ground!

Hi Benji,
Just wanted to say a big thank you for the U2 tickets that you gave me for my birthday. The
concert was on last night and it was the most amazing show I have ever seen. This is the first time I
have seen U2 play live and its something I wont easily forget. Let me tell you all about it.
We arrived in plenty of time and got a really good place, right in front of the stage. The
atmosphere was electric and by the time the band came on stage, the crowd was going wild! The
group played lots of their old favourites but also some of their new stuff. It was brilliant. There were
also some great special effects, like fireworks and there were two huge screens on either side of the
stage so that everyone could see Bono strutting around. He was wearing his trademark glasses so
cool!
Its a real pity that you couldnt make it to the concert with us. Never mind, well make sure that
you can come next time!
Thats about all my news for the moment. Once again, thanks a million for the tickets.
See you,
Seamus

Hi Maurice,
I cant thank you enough for the white-water rafting trip voucher that you sent me! I just got back
and had to write and tell you all about it! It was so exciting and thrilling. It is something that I will
never forget and cant wait to try again.
When I got on the bus, I thought that everyone looked very experienced. However, I soon realised
that it was their first time, too. We arrived at the river, put on our gear and listened while the
instructor gave us a safety briefing. He explained what we should do in an emergency but reassured
us that there would be an expert in every raft.
We soon set off. At the beginning, the water was very calm and slow-moving, but as we floated
further downstream, there were more and more rapids. The raft started moving from side to side and
I felt a little bit nervous. It was fantastic fun, though. By the time we reached the mouth of the river,
we were soaked through, but the adrenalin rush was amazing.
Lets go together next time. You would get such a kick out of it. Once again, thanks a million for
the voucher.
Lets talk soon.

Have you ever wondered if the weather affects your mood and behaviour? If you
have, then youre right! The way you think and feel can actually change
depending on the weather.
Many people complain of feeling down or having the blues in winter. This
may be because there isnt as much sunshine in the winter and our brains respond
to natural light. In Britain, for example, many people suffer from SAD (Seasonal
Affective Disorder) which makes them tired and bad-tempered because there is
little sunlight in the often grey and cloudy United Kingdom.
Of course, we all know that a bright, sunny day can make us really cheerful and
put us in a good mood. In New York City, however, the police blame hot weather
for rises in crime. During heatwaves in the summer crime levels can rise as
people get angry and aggressive because of the change in temperature.
Some scientists have discovered that low air pressure can cause people to have
problems concentrating and make them forgetful. So, if youre the kind of person
thats always forgetting where you left your house keys, blame it on the weather!
What about the wind? Does it drive you mad? It actually could be making you
crazy! Strong and constant winds really can get to you. Children tend to be more
troublesome in school and behave badly when its windy. Another result of
windy weather is that there are more traffic accidents. Therefore you should also
take extra care while driving.
So, next time you watch the weather report it could even predict your mood for
the day!

One of the worst storms ever to hit the United States was Hurricane Katrina in
August 2005. The storm flooded 80% of the city of New Orleans. The tsunami in
the Indian ocean in December 2004 was also a huge disaster that killed 230,000
people. But the reasons for terrible weather conditions have lead to a lot of
disagreement between scientists and meteorologists around the world.
Some experts say that in the past 100 years there havent been any real major
changes in the weather. They say that harsh weather is something that occurs
naturally, in cycles, and that it isnt getting any worse. The reason that people
think it is getting worse is due to the fact that, nowadays, there is more
information on weather events around the world in newspapers, on the radio and
on television.
There are, however, scientists who believe that global warming is affecting the
climate. They believe that greenhouse gases are responsible for making the Earth
warmer. Some of these gases are caused by people and businesses polluting the
environment.
Which theory do you agree with? The truth is, with more research and discussion
into the reasons for harsh weather conditions, the brighter the worlds future will

A pale, yellow moon was rising as I was walking home from my friends house. We had spent the evening
babysitting her younger sister and had watched two really frightening horror films on TV.
Imagine my shock when, suddenly, from the distance I heard a loud cry and saw a strange white form flying
towards me at top speed through the air. My mouth opened but no sound came out. The terror I felt stopped
me from screaming for help. I fell to the ground to escape as I was certain it was a ghost. I kept my eyes
tightly shut, in case I would end up staring into the eyes of a terrible monster.
After a couple of minutes, when I realised that I hadnt been hurt, I carefully opened my eyes and looked
around. It was then that I heard the hooting coming from a nearby tree. I looked up and saw a large, white
owl sitting on a branch, watching me with what seemed to be a puzzled expression on its face.
I could have kicked myself for being so stupid. Its strange how the mind can play tricks on you. I promised
myself that that was the last time I would go wandering around late at night after watching horror films!

It was a cold, windy night as I snuggled down under my warm blanket in bed. I had just switched off the
TV, brushed my teeth and was reading my favourite book, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I love
reading, especially at night just before I go to sleep. I was at the part in the book when Cathys ghost
appears.
As I turned the page of my book, I was sure I heard a strange noise at the window. Slowly, I got out of bed,
put on my slippers and dressing gown and walked towards the window. The wind was howling outside and
the branches of the trees were waving wildly back and forth. Suddenly, I heard the noise again. It sounded
like someone was knocking at the window. But I knew that was impossible because my room is on the first
floor of the house.
My heart was pounding as I quickly flung the window wide open. At that moment, a cold, white hand
grabbed my arm and tried to pull me out the window. I screamed and tried to free myself but the grip was
just too strong.
Suddenly, I heard a gentle voice saying, Susie, wake up. Youre having a nightmare. Everythings alright.
Slowly, I opened my eyes and saw my mum standing over my bed, smiling and holding my book in her
hand. I was so relieved that Cathys ghost hadnt been real!
