BEHAVIORAL ASSESSMENT (HIV)

For the behavioural assessment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus, specific behavioural

risk factors are identified, first is the unprotected oral, vaginal or anal sex to someone infected
with HIV or whose HIV status is unknown, this is somehow linked to the program goal of
reducing the prevalence of HIV by Health Education and proper condom use. Another
behavioural risk factor involves having many sexual partners, including IV drug users or sex
workers, the increase sexual behaviour to these groups increases the risk of acquiring HIV.
Sharing of needles and other equipments used in injecting drugs poses another risk for
acquiring HIV.

Non behavioural risk factors involves accidental infection through blood products. Blood
products are screened prior to transfusion so as to prevent patients from acquiring infection.
Presence of other sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhoea increases also risk for
acquiring HIV. By scarring of mucous membranes, HIV will easily be transmitted. Transfer of HIV
through breast milk is one of the major routes of HIV, though there is little prevalence.

One of the key preventable factors in HIV is Health Education to avoid promiscuous
behaviors. One may be fully informed about the transmission mechanisms of HIV so as to
prevent it. Having safe sex through the use of condoms or dental plastic wraps everytime having
oral, anal or vaginal sex can also prevent transmission of HIV. Not sharing of needles and
equipments for injecting drugs can effectively control HIV especially in populations wherein drug
use is evident.

Associated treatment behaviors includes following course of post exposure treatment

management. Follow clinical check-ups and individuals exposed to HIV transmissions should be
screened by HIV tests and confirmed.

BEHAVIOR TARGETS
MORE IMPORTANT LESS IMPORTANT
Q1 Having unprotected oral, Q3 Sharing of needles,
MORE CHANGEABLE vaginal or anal sex to someone syringes or any equipments
infected with HIV or whose HIV used for injecting drugs or
status is unknown similar use
Q2 Having many sexual Q4 Having another sexually
LESS CHANGEABLE partners, including IV drug transmitted infections (STIs)
users or sex workers
REASON FOR CHOOSING Q1 & Q2:

Having unprotected sex can be prevented by effective Health Education, people would
know the basic mechanism of acquiring HIV infection. Knowledge of having multiple sexual
partners and engaging in sexual activities with IV drug users and sex workers can increase risk
of HIV infection. In contrast to Q3 (Sharing of needles), majority are of underground in activity
which requires close monitoring and surveillance. Presence of other Sexually Transmitted
Infections (Q4) is more of clinical side.

STATEMENT OF BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVE:

Government employees and private sectors in Quezon City in close collaboration will
show reduction in HIV incidence at the end of 2017 after program implementation.

ECOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT

Effective health education & promotion activities/programs is vital in prevention and as

well as management of HIV cases, its absence makes people, especially individuals with high
risk behaviours more exposed to transmission mechanisms of HIV. With the advent of
technological advancements such as increased social networking, especially to males having
sex with males (MSM) even predisposes them in acquiring infection. Lack of funding and
support for testing center and capacity training of skilled personnel must be noted. Poverty and
poor sanitation even predisposes individuals to sexual activities.

ENVIRONMENTAL TARGETS
MORE IMPORTANT LESS IMPORTANT
MORE CHANGEABLE Q1 No strong health education Q3 Access to testing centers
programs
LESS CHANGEABLE Q2 Increased social Q4 Poverty
networking, especially to males
having sex with males (MSM)

REASON FOR CHOOSING Q1 &Q2:

With the implementation of strong and effective Health Education and Promotion
program (Q1), HIV incidence and promiscuous behaviours can be controlled. More important to
modify is the increased social networking (Q2), with easier ways to find sexual partners, though
less changeable due to innovations and many ways of media. Increased access to testing (Q3)
will somehow help in case finding as well as health education.Poverty (Q4) is a national matter
dealt by different institutions and organizations as well as people to eliminate.

STATEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTIVE:

Effective health education and promotion programs, will significantly decrease incidence
of HIV cases and promiscuous behaviours at the end of 2017 after program implementation.
