The children work in pairs to represent a character.
Each pair mime the character.
The one who guesses the name of the character is awarded a point.

Introducing a friend (for 8 - 12 year-old children)

Divide the class into pairs. Itd be better to join students who dont usually get together.
Each pair will have to exchange personal information , likes and dislikes, expectations, etc.
After that, every child will have to introduce his/her partner instead of him/herself.

After teaching your students the names of different countries and nationalities, you can give
them the possibility to play with those new words. This is very good for memory retention.

Note: - Theres a complete list of countries and nationalities in the Vocabulary Bank.

To start a new topic with a strip cartoon is always a good idea. Children will get new information
about Eddie and his friends. They will also be able to :

* colour the pictures

* read the conversations and act them out
* invent new dialogues
* suggest possible headlines.

Useful Ideas
Give your students a copy of the following puzzle

They will have to find 5 countries and 5 nationalities. The words may be down, up, backward
or forward.
After doing that, you can also ask your students to write sentences, a story or a conversation
using those words.

Guess the Nationalities

For those students who always finish before the others, you can give them a new challenge:
to find the nationalities by writing the letters in the correct order.

Some useful ideas to practise vocabulary related to FEELINGS
Students need to learn the lexis of the language. They have to learn the meaning of
the words and how they are used.
After your students have learnt new words, they will need opportunities to become
more familiar with them.
There are many simple vocabulary activities you can give your students.

The following ones are some examples:

- Filling in blanks/gaps in sentences (You can make it more challenging if they

..have to choose between different alternatives).
- Filling in crosswords/grids/diagrams.

- Matching pictures with words.

- Matching parts of words with other parts.
- Matching sets of related words.

- Classifying items into lists.

- Memory games.

Start the class by showing these pictures to your students.

Ask the children to identify each card by saying: You could also ask your class to make cards for
Happy / Sad / Angry / Sleepy new words (e.g. tired - hungry - thirsty)

BACK TO INDEX 26
After that, you can give each child this exercise to complete:

Complete using these words:

HAPPY - SLEEPY - SAD - ANGRY

Im ........................... Im ...........................

Im ........................... Im ...........................

Then you can practise the new words using pictures of Eddies friends.

Give each child a copy of this exercise. Theyll have to answer some questions.

Look at the picture and answer:

1- Is Paul sad ?
2- How is he ?
3- Is Jenny happy ?
4- How is Mat ?
5- Is the cat happy or sad ?

BACK TO INDEX 27
You can also ask your students to draw pictures or write sentences answering the following questions:

What do you like doing ?

What dont you like doing ?

There are some games that can be used to become more familiar with the new vocabulary.

Dancing feeling:
- Choose one child to be the leader.
- Play a music - cassette.
- The leader walks around and whispers in each childs ear one of the feelings - words (happy/
..angry/sad/tired/surprised...).
- Then each child acts out that feeling to the music.
- When all the children are in motion, stop the music. They freeze where they are.
- Ask several children to tell the group their feeling.
- Choose a new leader and play again

Dont forget what Ive said:

- The teacher says a feeling-word or a sentence using that word.
- A pupil repeats that word or sentence and adds one more.

E.g. - Teacher: happy

- Pupil 1: happy, sad
- Pupil 2: happy, sad, angry
- Pupil 3: happy,sad,angry,tired

- When somebody cant remember the sequence, he or she has to draw a picture on the
..board. If the class guesses what it is, that pupil goes on playing.
- Check that they have understood what to do.
- Start playing with the whole class.

- Grammar is important but not initially !

- Students have to feel free to make mistakes !

- Encourage them to write !

Variations : - Children can colour the pictures.

- You can give them some words to be used.

- Students can be asked to write the headline.

Important : - While the children are working, go round the class to help them

Draw a blank line on the board to represent each letter of a word (e.g.: for the word house, you
write - - - - - )
Students start to call out letters. If a letter belongs to the word, write it on the appropiate blank
line; if it doesnt , draw one part of the Hangman picture. Students will have to guess the
missing letters in the word before you have drawn the ten lines to complete the Hangman.
You can also let your students choose a word and draw the blank lines and the Hangman on
the board.

Team Spelling game

Divide the class into 2 groups.
Show a picture to the class and ask one of the pupils to spell it.
If the pupil can spell it, his/her team is awarded a point.
If the pupil cannot do it correctly, the other team has the chance to spell it and be awarded a
bonus point.

Funny cards
Divide the class into small groups.
Put the cards into a bag. Each group must take out 10 cards at random.(See Cards-Section
for them)
They will have to form words using the letters. Eddies card can be used as a joker.
You can also ask your students to write sentences using the formed words , or form words
related to the topic/unit .
Give them enough time to finish the task.
Then, ask your students to read the words they could form (or sentences) and award a point
for every word/sentence correctly formed.

Posters / Flashcards
Posters and flashcards are useful visual resources. We offer you a lot of pictures with their
initial letters . They can be displayed on the walls. Theyll let you develop different kind of
activities. (See Flashcards and Posters- Section for them).

Making up Words
Materials needed:
-Letters of the Alphabet Cards.
-Pictures of Eddie to use as jokers (see Eddies cards)

Divide the class into groups.

Each group will have to pick up 10 cards at random.
Students will have to make up as many words as possible using the letters in their cards.
(If possible students will try to make up sentences with those words).
Teachers should set a limit of time before beginning to play.
Once the assigned time has finished each group will show the others their work.
The group with the most words is the winner.

BACK TO INDEX 56
To start a new unit by means of a game is a good idea.
Thats why English & Fun recommends introducing the theme
by showing your students flashcards of classroom objects and then playing
Good Memory.

While you are showing the pictures to the children you can ask them questions
about their own classroom objects. E.g: What colour is your ruler? / Is it long/
short? Or you can also give them some commands: Raise your left hand if you
have a green ruler / Stand up the ones who have a red pen / Clap your hands if
you have a red and blue rubber.

Good Memory:
Divide the class into two groups
Place a number of pictures on the blackboard and tell your students that they have to memorize
all of them.
Choose a volunteer from one of the teams and invite him/her to go out and wait outside until his/
her partners call him/her back.
A volunteer from the other team hide one of the pictures.
When the one who was outside enters the classroom, he/she has to guess which picture is
missing.
Repeat this procedure many times. The winner is the team that gets more points.

BACK TO INDEX 57
You can also introduce this unit by doing the exercise: Sharing Experiences

BACK TO INDEX 58
Sharing Experiences:
Ask your students to bring photographs of their school (if they dont have any, tell them to draw
it). In small groups they will share different experiences and situations related to their
photographs. Once they have exchanged information, each group can show the others the
pictures and retell what they have been talking about.
Its essential that the teacher guides the students through the comprehension of the different
contents that may arise from the students experiences.

If you want to revise the structures Whats this? / Its/ Is this a? here you have the
strip cartoon on page 60.

Guessing game
After reading the comic you can play a Guessing Game:
Divide the class into 2 or more groups.
A volunteer gets a flashcard, which he/she cant show to the others.
The rest of the class will have to guess which picture he/she has got in his/her hands and its
colour by asking questions such as: Is it a..? / Is it (colour)?
The one who has the flashcard can only answer Yes or No or Yes, it is / No, it isnt.
The winner is the team that gets more points.

BACK TO INDEX 59
BACK TO INDEX 60
You can also give your students the following exercise to practise the structure Is
this a?

Is this a...?

Is this a ruler?
Yes, it is.

Is this a pencil?
No, it isnt. Its a chair.

chair?

rubber?

book?

door?

BACK TO INDEX 61
If you want to revise the possessive case and pronouns, here you have the following
strip cartoon. After reading it you can ask your students to think about a possible
title for the story. This is a good opportunity to remind your students to write their
names on their school objects.

To revise possession you can give your students the following picture and ask
them to make statements expressing what each of the characters has got, e.g:
Eddie has got a rubber

BACK TO INDEX 62
In the following exercise students have to colour the school objects and then
complete the sentences with the colours they have chosen.

My schoolbag is

My rubber is and

BACK TO INDEX 63
The following exercise is for your students to check if they can remember the
vocabulary they have learnt in this unit.

BACK TO INDEX 64
You can give the following picture to your students for a dictation. You can revise
colours, prepositions, numbers, etc. Here we give you some ideas:

Colour two books green and other two red.

Draw a rubber under a chair.
Draw a ruler under a table.
Draw four pencil boxes on a table.
Colour the window brown.
Draw a schoolbag between the tables and draw a pencil in it.

You can also ask your students to complete the picture by drawing other
things that they can find in their classroom.

Game: Professions at School
Divide the class into groups. Give each group a card with the name of a profession at school.
Each group will have to act out what is on the card, e.g.: the headmaster. The other teams will
have to guess who is being imitated. Dont forget to remind your students the importance of
respect for the others, especially when imitating them.
The object of the game is to revise the name of different professions and subjects at school.

Game: How do you go to school?

Materials: school objects cards
means of transport cards

Aim: To revise vocabulary related to school and to learn the name of possible means
of transport used to go to school.

Divide the class into groups of 4 or 5 students. Give each group two pictures: a mean of transport
and a schoolbag. Divide the school objects cards and give each team the same number of
them, so that each group will have different cards. Students will have to:
describe the mean of transport by which Paul goes to school.
describe the place where Pauls school is situated according to the mean of transport Paul
..has e.g. Paul goes to school by bike, so the school is near his house, Paul goes to
..school by horse, so the school is in the country, etc.
write which school object Paul has and which ones are missing to complete his
..schoolbag.

Finally, each team will show the others their work. Then theyll have to look for the missing school
object among the other teams: theyll hand in the spelling forms for pictures.
The winner is the team that completes the schoolbag with the greatest number of school
objects.

Why do we always teach the same names?
Books and videos usually include characters whose names are the common ones.
Here we give you a list of names for your students not only to learn new ones but also
to enrich their vocabulary.

Games should have an aim and purpose. They should be fun for children.
You can use them to:

- develop a positive classroom atmosphere

- consolidate and reinforce language structures and lexis
- evaluate the childrens performance.

Dominoes
Dominoes is a combinative game. Your students can combine: shapes colours sizes and
numbers. They can also identify similarities and differences (e.g.: countries-nationalities).

English and Fun suggests that you should ask your students to stick each domino onto card
before cutting them out.

Encourage the children to give a description of each domino each time they must lay down one.

How to play ???

- Divide the class into pairs or groups of four.

- Give each student 7 dominoes. The remaining ones are left face down on one side of the table.

- After the first picture or word has been placed, the game is continued by the next player putting
another picture or word next to it. There must be a connection of some sort that links the two words or
pictures (e.g.: Country Nationality).

- The game continues with each child laying down a domino in turn. If one of the children cannot lay
down a domino he/she must take another one from the remaining pack on the table and wait until their
next turn before laying down another domino.

- The winner is the first child to use up all the dominoes in his/her hand.

Playing with songs!
Divide the class into 2 groups or teams.
One of the teams will have to choose a song they like very much and start singing it .
The other team will have to act out the song without saying a word.
(The students would act as if they were a mirror of the other group).
If they do it well, they will be awarded a point.
The other group chooses a new song and then, the first group acts it out.
The winner is the team with more points.

Playing bingo with songs

Choose at least 10 different songs . (Your students should know them).
If it is possible, have them recorded in a same cassette.
Give your students a copy of the following grid :

They will have to write the name of 4 songs or draw a picture connected
to each song.

Play the cassette , and when the students listen to the songs theyve chosen , they will have to
cover its name or its picture with a small piece of paper.

The first child to cover all the spaces has to call BINGO and will be the
WINNER of the game.

Cards, Flashcards and Posters:
Teachers everywhere agree theres never enough time in the day to do everything that needs
to be done.
This section provides you with al of the motivational materials you need to keep students
excited about learning (classroom helper badge, incentives and motivational cards,
flashcards and posters).

Pictures are a simple but effective way to teach vocabulary. They can be used at the end of a
lesson as a reinforcement or extension activity.

We recommend you to:

Enlarge the cards given in this section.

Make sure the pictures can be seen from the back of the class.

Stick your pictures on coloured cards and cover them with transparent adhesive plastic to
protect them.
