Purpose/Rationale
In this lesson, we will explore the different ways that voice can be controlled or even taken away.
William Goldings Lord of the Flies is an excellent representation of how ones voice can
ultimately become a source of power. This lesson will allow students to delve into the themes of
voice and power and interpret several characters throughout the novel. For this lesson, students
will write Just because prose for the characters of the community of boys who are not heard as
much, if at all.
Goals
Will gain insight on supporting characters in the novel
Understand the uses and purpose of prose in literature
Create their own piece of prose pertaining to the character selected
Objectives
Content Objective: Students will be able to identify the meaning and purpose of prose.
Language Objective: Students will be able to write a piece of prose using the novel Lord of the
Flies and its characters for reference.
Florida Standards
LAFS.910.RL.1.2: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its
development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by
specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
LAFS.910.RL.1.3: Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting
motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the
plot or develop the theme.

Visual Aids and oral/impromptu presentations if needed
Assessments
Students will be asked to think about people around the world who may not have a voice
in todays society (women, homeless, immigrants, etc.). They will then write just
because prose for them as well.
