Lesson Plan: Scrapbook Letter Q


Grade: Kindergarten Unit: Letter Scrapbooks
Topic: Letter Q Date: Tuesday, Feb. 28 th 17
Length of Lesson: 30 min. Subject: Early Literacy

Materials Each students letter scrapbook


17 prepared outlines of the capital letter Q on construction paper
17 copies of other cut-outs
17 glue sticks
Letter Q picture book
Smart board and computer to play letter Q song on You Tube
17 miniature chalk boards (have capital letter Q written on 17 of them in
advance)
17 pieces of chalk
17 cloths for erasing
Mini white board and dry-erase marker

Procedure
Introduction 1 Get the classs attention at the carpet area. Go through the morning routine:
(10 min.) todays date, star of the day reading the schedule, good morning song, sentence
re-arranging using given words, star of the day name (cheer, count, write #,
find name in cards).

2 Explain that it is time to work on our letter scrapbook for the letter Q.

a Get the student letter Q expert to present.

b Read the Qq book

c Play the Qq letter song on You Tube.

d Get the star of the day and two other students to pass out
chalkboards, chalk, and cloths.

e Ask the students to sit on the edge of the rectangular


carpet.

f If you want to start your letters at the top, if you want to


start your letters at the top, if you want to start a letter,
then you better, better, better, remember to start it at the
top!

g Point to the bottom, middle, and top and ask: Is this the
top, top, top? each time.

h Go over tracing the letter 3 times with the starting at the


top and saying Big C curve, keep going, little line.

i Have the students write the letter 3 times with their chalk.
Ask them on the third one to make it their best one, and
then turn to their neighbour and give a compliment starting
with the letter Q.

j Ask the same students who passed out the chalkboards,


chalk, and cloths to collect these and put them back in the
bin.

3 Show the students the scrapbook sample pages and show them what they will
be doing. Write the steps on the mini white board: print letter Q, glue, & get
work checked at yellow table. Remind the students to put a star next to their
best letter.

4 Review the cut-outs which need to be glued down and where with the class.

5 Ask the star of the day to call out table groups to go and get to work.

Body of Lesson 1 Circulate amongst the students, make sure they are on track and assist them as
(18 min.) needed, carrying out some formative assessment. Make sure they are following
the steps as outlined on the mini white board.

2 Be ready at the yellow table for students to show you their work. Check their
work and make sure they put a star next to their best letter. Put a star next to
the letter you think is their best. If they need to practice more at home send
them home with the practice sheet. Clip the strip in their scrapbooks at the top
of the page saying whether they need more practice or not.

3 When the students are done and have their worked checked they will be asked
to clean-up and to put their name at a center.

Closure 1. As the students finish and have their work checked they will be asked to put
(2 min.) their name next to a center and begin morning centers.
Sponge Activity As students finish they will be asked to begin centers.
Assessment Observational: Observe/converse/question the students as they work on their
scrapbooks. Check scrapbooks after and mark which is their best letter. Decide with the
student if they need to practice more at home and if so send home the practice letter
Q sheet. Check also for student recognition of the letter, sound of letter, appropriate
action, and printing.

Specific Learner Some students may need some extra guidance and assistance with gluing down their
