THE PROBLEM

Introduction
Background of the study

This study is focused in Nickel contaminated soil. Soil contamination is the presence of

man-made chemicals or other alteration to the natural soil environment. Contaminated soils are

a big problem to the world since it destroys the rhizosphere and prevents plants to grow healthy

or else the plants that were planted in a chemical contaminated soil might not be edible.

Indigenous Microorganisms are a group of innate microbial consortium that inhabits the

soil and the surfaces of all living things inside and outside which have the potentiality in

biodegradation, bioleaching, biocomposting, nitrogen fixation, improving soil fertility and as well

in the production of plant growth hormones. In hopes that IMO might lessen the absorption of

Nickel in a plant, to help in remediating the soil and provide healthy and safer environment.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine whether Indigenous Microorganisms (IMO) helps in

reducing the absorption of Nickel in plants and whether it helps in the growth of plants.

Specifically, the study seeks to answer the following questions:

1 Will the use of Indigenous Microorganism (IMO) affect the growth of Brassica rapa?

2 How much Nickel is left on the soil:

a. Brassica rapa with 0% IMO?

b. Brassica rapa with 25% IMO?
c. Brassica rapa with 50% IMO?

Hypothesis of the Study

H0: There is no significant difference relationship between different concentration of IMO

to the growth and Nickel absorption of Ipomoea batatas plant

HA: There is a significant difference relationship between different concentration of IMO

to the growth and Nickel absorption of Ipomoea batatas plant

Conceptual Framework

The diagram is used to provide a model to explain the connection of the

Indigenous Microorganism to the growth of a plant in a Nickel contaminated soil. Indigenous

Microorganisms are a group of innate microbial consortium that inhabits the soil and the

surfaces of all living things inside and outside which have the potentiality in biodegradation,

bioleaching, bio composting, nitrogen fixation, improving soil fertility and as well in the

production of plant growth. This explains if IMO helps in improving the growth of a certain plant

in a soil contaminated with Nickel or it will not fight the Nickel absorption of the plant.

Scope and Limitations

This study focuses in determining the effects of Indigenous Microorganism in Nickel

contaminated soil planted with carrots. This study is limited to three samples of B. rapa with

Nickel contaminated soil. Plant A (control variable): no IMO, Plant B: 25% IMO, and Plant C:

50% IMO. All soil will contain aqueous Nickel solution (5 ppm). This study is limited to the use

of sunlight, water, and three pots as a tool for researching. The researchers will conduct the

experimentation for three times. Each trial will be good for four weeks. The first week will be

used for planting the sample in another container and the making of the IMO and the absorption

of the soil of the aqueous Nickel solution that will be poured to it. In the 2 nd week, the

researchers will transfer the plant samples to the pot with the Nickel contaminated soil. The

researchers will observe the plant growth for 2 weeks, and at the end of the week the

researchers will bring the samples to F.A.S.T.L.A.B for analysis.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study is beneficial to many individual specifically to the people who

usually work with plants or in the field of agriculture such as gardeners, botanist, horticulturalist,

farmer or agriculturist, herbalist, agriculturist or tree surgeon. This study wont just help the

people in the said field but also those small scale individuals.

Definition of Terms

The following terms were defined operationally to allow clear understanding of the study

among the readers.

Nickel. a silvery-white metal, the chemical element of atomic number 28.

Indigenous Microorganism (IMO). are a group of innate microbial consortium that

inhabits the soil and the surfaces of all living things inside and outside which have the
potentiality in biodegradation, bioleaching, biocomposting, nitrogen fixation, improving soil
